Demonstrators
Table of contents
- TU Kaiserlautern (2014/15): Parabolic trough demonstrator (Mark/Schnell project)
- TU Braunschweig (2016/17): uni-con2 – universal concrete construction (projects Budelmann/Kloft, Dröder/Kloft; Empelmann)
- TU Berlin & TU Dresden (2017): Carbon reinforced concrete bridge (project Lordick/Schlaich)
- TU Chemnitz (2019/20): Carbon reinforced concrete shell demonstrator (Kroll/Gelbrich projects)
- TU Dresden (2018–2021): CarboLight Bridge (projects Curbach)
Demonstrators serve to impressively visualise the results of basic research. In SPP 1542, demonstration objects were created as planned in the projects or with financial support from the coordination project.
TU Kaiserlautern (2014/15): Parabolic trough demonstrator (Mark/Schnell project)
In 2015, the controllable parabolic trough made of HPC was presented to the public. Parabolic trough power plants have a high potential to contribute significantly to electricity generation, e.g. in Southern Europe and North Africa. In the ConSol project (funded by BMWi), two additional, remarkable 12 m long and 6 m wide HPC parabolic troughs were realised in 2018.

TU Braunschweig (2016/17): uni-con2 – universal concrete construction (projects Budelmann/Kloft, Dröder/Kloft; Empelmann)

Finished demonstrator uni-con²
The feasibility of the production, assembly and dry joining of filigree concrete elements was demonstrated. Short report.
TU Berlin & TU Dresden (2017): Carbon reinforced concrete bridge (project Lordick/Schlaich)
The 3 m long bridge with ruled surface geometry was optimised using a line geometric model. It impressively demonstrates what material-saving construction of the future can look like. The bridge was presented at the Footbridge 2017 Conference in Berlin. More information in Project report Lordick/Schlaich.

TU Chemnitz (2019/20): Carbon reinforced concrete shell demonstrator (Kroll/Gelbrich projects)

Carbon reinforced concrete shell demonstrator made of 5 cm thick double-curved individual elements
Carbon reinforced concrete shell elements were produced with the flexible GRP formwork system developed in the SPP. Short report.
TU Dresden (2018–2021): CarboLight Bridge (projects Curbach)
The exhibition bridge for the Deutsches Museum in Munich demonstrates the potential of novel composites, internal grading and shaping according to the flow of forces. Short report.

Shape-optimised CarboLight Bridge ready for the exhibits
At the fib Congress in Oslo from 12 to 16 June 2022, the bridge received two awards: the Exceptional Recognition Special Prize in the Award for Outstanding Concrete Structures competition and the Innovation Award 2022 in the Structures category for the paper "An ultra-light Carbon Concrete Bridge: From Design to Realisation" by the authors Marc Koschemann, Iurii Vakaliuk and Manfred Curbach.
