Professor Dr.-Ing. Arnd Stephan has been a full professor and chair of Electric Railways at the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) since 2008. He studied electrical engineering/ electrical railways at the Hochschule für Verkehrswesen “Friedrich List” (HfV) in Dresden from 1985 to 1990. From 1990 to 1993, he worked as a researcher at the HfV/ TUD and finished his doctoral studies in 1995. Between 1993 and 2008, he occupied the positions of project manager, branch manager (1995) and procurator (2003) at the Institut für Bahntechnik GmbH (IFB) and became its managing director in 2012. The Federal Railway Authority of Germany certified him as an expert for electrotechnical systems in 1995, for magnetic levitation train systems in 1999 and for converter systems in 2015. His areas of expertise include rolling stock technology, electric drive systems, alternative drives and hybrid vehicle technology, electric railway power supplies, magnetic levitation train systems, approval processes, railway operation and railway safety issues. He is responsible for the lectures “Theory of electric Transport Systems”, “Operation of electric Railway Systems”, “Power Supply of electric Railways”, “Electric Vehicles” and “Electric Railways I and II”. He is a member of the VDE ETG A2-Railways and Vehicles with Electric Drives.
