The Chair has a cutting-edge simulation infrastructure available, which covers several areas of research and application, such as optimization of single flight trajectories, flight operations with a fixed-base Airbus A320 flight simulator or the control and management of traffic flows both on aerodromes and in airspace.

Simulators

A320 Research Simulator

The true to original replica of an Airbus A320 flight deck, used as a Fixed-base Flight Training Device, allows simulation of countless aspects utilized during flight operations, including manual control of the aircraft through Fly-by-wire technology using real side-sticks.

Apron Control Simulator VokoSim

The apron control simulator replicates the movement of aircraft and ground service vehicles at an aerodrome, so that a test person can perform the tasks of an apron controller for research purposes.

Trajectory Optimization TOMATO/SOPHIA

The software tool-chain TOMATO and the subjacent flight performance model SOPHIA allow the multi-criteria optimization of flight trajectories with respect to safety, operating costs and emissions. Considering both current ATS airspace restrictions and future requirements arising from SESAR, various scenarios can be assessed as fast-time simulations.

TABATS - Testbench for Agent-based Air Traffic Simulation

The air traffic management simulation TABATS allows the modelling of complex air traffic scenarios with the option of coupling with an arrival or departure manager (AMAN/DMAN) and the visualisation of a virtual radar screen. Moreover, the impact of uncertainties (wind prediction errors, thunderstorms) on the traffic flow can be assessed.

The Chair offers a broad experience in the conduct of scientific tests by developing and utilizing various simulators. Recent projects linked with the simulation infrastructure are, among others:
