Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden: Art and science in dialogue
In line with TU Dresden's mission statement, the new Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden is an innovative bridge-builder - between science and art, from the humanities and social sciences to TU Dresden's STEM faculties, and from our university to society as a whole.
In the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden, a joint initiative of THE SCHAUFLER FOUNDATION and TU Dresden, researchers and artists address the interactions between technology, art, science, and entrepreneurship.
The Lab consists of the two pillars: Schaufler Kolleg@TU Dresden and Schaufler Residency@TU Dresden. The joint research of all scholarship holders focuses on the interface between technical innovation and the evolving society and culture.
The Lab is the platform and the location for transdisciplinary research cooperations at TU Dresden. At the same time, the Lab provides a forum for the transparent discussion of scientific topics in exchange with a broad public.
Since May 2020, the first early-career researchers from the humanities and social sciences have been working on their three-year doctoral projects at the Lab’s Graduate School. Starting in September 2020, the first artist of the Artist in Residence Programme will be visiting TU Dresden for six months. Another residency will be advertised for each of the following two years. The doctoral students and the respective artist in residence conduct joint research in intensive exchange with researchers from the university's STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) on relevant questions from the field of natural sciences.
In the project's first funding phase from 2020 to 2022, research will revolve around the core topic 'Artificial intelligence as factor and consequence of societal and cultural change’. Research partners are those research institutions of the university that contribute to the development of artificial intelligence technologies: primarily the new Cluster of Excellence at TU Dresden for Tactile Internet (CeTI), and the Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence Dresden/Leipzig (ScaDS.AI).
