TU Dresden applies for partnership of the New European Bauhaus initiative
"I want NextGenerationEU to kickstart a European renovation wave and make our Union a leader in the circular economy. But this is not just an environmental or economic project: it needs to be a new cultural project for Europe." (Ursula Von der Leyen)
In October 2020, President Ursula von der Leyen announced the New European Bauhaus initiative of the European Commission. The New European Bauhaus (NEB) is an environmental, economic and cultural project, aiming to combine design, sustainability, accessibility, affordability and investment in order to help deliver the European Green Deal. The core values of the New European Bauhaus are thus sustainability, aesthetics and inclusiveness. TUD fully embraces these core values and aims to contribute to this new initiative.
A group of volunteer staff members of TUD has formed to exchange and disseminate ideas about the NEB initiative and collaborate on future activities. They currently include:

TUD wishes to become a partner in the NEB initiative and has outlined the following activities in its partnership application:
- Establish a sustainability platform within TUD highlighting ongoing activities under the NEB umbrella of TU Dresden and its regional partners;
- Implement sustainability seminars integrated into the mandatory curriculum of international students, starting in the winter semester of 2023;
- Initiate a university-wide lecture series on NEB related topics;
- Create links between existing networks associated with TUD and NEB;
- Mobilize research minds towards the goals of NEB, and promote participation in upcoming NEB activities, seminars, pilot projects and goals.
The research focus of our faculty is very diverse. A portfolio of existing projects and activities has been assembled to highlight the continuous and ongoing development of projects at TUD that fit the NEB initiative, supporting the mission to follow the SDGs and set sustainability as one central aspect of designing.

The upcoming DNCi2021 workshop on 9th June 2021 on “Circular added value in the building stock - Dresden and Saxony as pioneers for sustainable building and living”, organized by the United Nations University Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources (UNU-Flores), TUD and the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) is one example of local collaboration in the NEB spirit.
As the NEB initiative develops further TUD will evaluate and get involved in new opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing and funding. All staff members of TUD are welcome to join the efforts and exchange their ideas.
