New from school year 2024/25: semester-long internship

From the start of the 2024/25 school year, teacher training students at TU Dresden will be able to gain continuous practical experience at an early stage and learn to reflect on this and combine it with theory. This is made possible by a modified internship format and close cooperation between TU Dresden and the internship schools - even in higher semesters.
How it used to be:
Studying to become a teacher primarily means getting to know theories and research practices at the university. You then have to transfer this knowledge into your own practice or formally translate it into practice. The first format in which you do this is the block placement A.
In preparation for this block internship, you will attend an introductory course in July/August, where you will be instructed primarily in school law matters and the requirements for the internship report will be discussed. You then go to the placement school for 100 hours in September and ideally you will be accompanied by a mentor at the school. What this support looks like depends entirely on the circumstances at the school and the mentor in question. After your internship, you will attend an evaluation event in October. At this late stage, there is often no time to revisit the situations you have experienced, as you have already left the placement school and the internship behind you. The only thing missing is the internship report, for which you will receive recommendations. By the time you have handed this in at the latest, the internship is a thing of the past for you.
In this format, you have to manage to transfer the theories you have heard at university into your pedagogical practice in a meaningful way mostly by yourself. This is not easy, some students despair, but this should now change:
How it is possible:
During your studies, you will systematically be given weekly opportunities to gain practical experience, to reflect on this continuously and, above all, to combine it with the theory you have heard in seminars. With these weekly experiences, you yourself can enrich the seminars and lectures at the university, because the continuous practice puts you in a position to question theories and models on the basis of your own experiences. You also have the opportunity to discuss these thoughts together with the project leaders.

Second pilot phase in the 2024/25 school year
Every Friday: 45 students support learning at four schools
Following the first pilot phase in spring 2024 with 13 students at two schools in Zittau and Görlitz, the second round started in autumn 2024. Four secondary schools in Görlitz, Löbau, Neusalza-Spremberg and Zittau are taking part. Now, 45 students work in a class team of four and support the pupils in one class in their learning with innovative teaching-learning formats that are already being used successfully at the Dresden University School.

Project against teacher shortage continues - for now

After the winter holidays, students from TU Dresden will continue to teach every Friday at five schools in the district of Görlitz. The money is available. Whether the project dies after that or whether it succeeds depends primarily on one decision.
From the article: ‘Although there are several programmes in Saxony to combat teacher shortages and for more classroom time in teacher training, Minister of Education Clemens emphasised that he was “on fire” for this particular project, which was developed in the district of Görlitz together with the TU Dresden. For this reason, he will be campaigning for this model to be rolled out to other regions and expanded on a larger scale in the district of Görlitz with 50 schools throughout eastern Saxony. However, Clemens emphasised that the funding would first have to be clarified.’

Mayor Matthias Lehmann is delighted: the town has made excellent preparations to recruit Dresden students as teachers. Thanks to the accommodation provided, the prospective teachers no longer have to travel early in the morning from the state capital to Pestalozzi Secondary School. Eight students from TU Dresden take over the lessons in the fifth classes every Friday, giving the regular teachers more free time.

Das Lerngruppenprojekt, mit dem der Lehrermangel in die Oberlausitz an den Schulen aufgefangen werden soll, geht weiter. Nach den Herbstferien sind 45 Lehramtsstudierende jeden Freitag in einer Schule in Neusalza-Spremberg, Görlitz, Zittau oder Löbau im Einsatz, so die TU Dresden. In Viererteams begleiten sie eine Schulklasse den ganzen Tag beim Lernen.
Bereits im Mai und Juni waren in der ersten Pilotphase 14 Studierende an 2 Schulen in Weißwasser und Zittau eingesetzt. Viele von ihnen würden das Praktikum nun fortsetzen.
Die erste Pilotphase wurde laut TU Dresden durch die finanzielle Unterstützung des Deutschen Zentrums für Astrophysik in Görlitz möglich. Jetzt wird das Projekt vom Kasus Institut Görlitz sowie dem Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf gefördert.
Alternative teaching internship at selected secondary schools in eastern Saxony - second pilot phase launched
The second pilot phase of the project to test a better theoretical-practical link in the teacher training program has started at TU Dresden. Around 45 students will travel to a school in Neusalza-Spremberg, Görlitz, Zittau or Löbau every Friday after the fall break. They will accompany a school class in a team of four for a whole day of learning every week.
After the introductory event at the end of September, the teachers in training familiarize themselves with the local conditions and get to know their mentors and supporting colleagues. To this end, they visit their placement schools in the first weeks of October and prepare for their first days of learning together. These then start for the class team and the students after the Saxon fall break.

Student job vacancies in the ELF (Educational Science Teaching and Research Laboratory)
The second pilot phase of the project to improve the link between theory and practice in teacher training courses at TU Dresden begins in autumn. The participating students benefit from the experience gained during the semester-long school internship at the Dresden University School. They are supported in formats of the Educational Teaching and Research Laboratory (ELF), e.g. collegial case consultation. The team is also looking for Student Assistants to strengthen its team.

Enrollment for students
Please register for the semester-accompanying internship A in the OPAL course (link at the bottom of this box). You will then be automatically invited to the information session. After the preparatory sessions, the placement will begin at selected schools in East Saxony on one day in the 43rd calendar week (20-24.10.2025) and will run until the end of June 2026. Late enrolment remains possible until the start of winter term 2025/26.

FAQ - Questions and answers for interested students
Here you will find general information on the concept and procedure of the semester-accompanying school internship. You can ask detailed questions about the recognition of credits in the “Open questions” section directly in the OPAL course “Semester-accompanying block internship A” (summer term 2025).
In September 2025, the semester-accompanying internship will start, in which you as a student of Teacher Training - Elementary Schools, Secondary Schools or Gymnasium will not complete the block internship A as a block, but as a semester-accompanying internship over 2 semesters (one school year) in one of the internship schools. Together with others - in a group of 4 students - you will always accompany the same 5th grade class one day a week (excluding vacations and examination periods). Half of the 5/6 teaching units will be credited as work placement and the other half will be paid.
As part of a small team of 3-4 students, you "adopt" a class for one day throughout the entire school year. As a learning facilitator, you will be responsible for around 7 students. This will enable you to spend a school year practically dealing with pedagogical relationship work and classroom management in a small team. You will prepare the content for this day specifically for the respective group of students, and you will receive the basic structures from TU Dresden.
As part of the "class team", you will accompany the students in (1) promoting reading, (2) building skills for self-regulated learning in the context of e.g. learning offices and (3) in cooperative learning processes in formats such as project work. You will reflect on your work on site at the school in the "class team" and also with mentors (e.g. former teachers from the school who provide support on site).
At the university, you will continuously attend the collegial case consultation parallel to the internship. The seminar on the block internship can also accompany you during the semester-accompanying internship. Through this support, you can use your experiences for your own skills acquisition. Before starting at the school, all participants receive a compact introduction to the teaching-learning formats.
Die Studierenden werden Schüler:innen begleiten im Lernen und Kompetenzen zum selbstregulierten Lernen mit ihnen aufbauen. Diese Schüler:innen hätten ohne diese Begleitung aufgrund des großen Lehrermangels Stundenausfall. Je nach Anzahl der Klassen an den Schulen, werden kleine Studierendenteams (ca. 16-30 Studierende pro Schule), die Schule einmal in der Woche unterstützt. Dabei werden sie keinen klassischen Fachunterricht leisten müssen, sondern sich in anderen Lehr-Lernformaten üben wie Projektarbeit oder Lernbüroarbeit.
Whenever there is school, i.e. no vacation, the students for this model are at one of TU Dresden's internship schools from mid-October. This means that they only spend four days a week at TU Dresden and one day at school during the lecture period. Except during exam weeks, they are also at school during the lecture-free period and accompany the students.
Depending on the school, it will probably be a Monday, Wednesday or Friday.
Half of the work at the school is counted as Block A, i.e. after one school year, 100 hours of work placement have been completed and thus Block A has been completed (after submitting an internship report). The other half is paid to the students, for which they receive a contract (60 Euros per day in the school).
This continuous practice combined with supervised teaching-learning formats at TU Dresden will enable you to build competencies on acquired knowledge and necessary skills in school practice. In this format, you can reflect on your own attitude and develop action routines that you need to feel confident in acting with the students. As part of the "class team" of 4 future teachers you will initially focus on just 7 students; ideally, this number will be increased to 10 or 15 students in Block B in a similar way. In this way, you can grow into the activities of a teacher and after Block A and B, you will be able to accompany 28 students with the experience you have gained.
The following internship schools took part in the pilot phase in the 2024/25 school year. The participation of further schools is in preparation.
The local authorities will be happy to provide you with overnight accommodation free of charge.
If you would like to participate in the alternative block internship A (semester-accompanying), please register as soon as possible, but no later than the end of the school year on June 27, 2025 in the OPAL course "Semester-accompanying block internship A".
The number of participating schools depends directly on the number of bindingly enrolled students. Please note that (not only) the new schools in the project require a certain preparation time. Ideally, they can start planning before the summer break.
In order to enable timely enrollment and because the school year and the academic year do not have the same rhythm, the accompanying seminar is planned across semesters.
It is possible to switch from a block internship to a semester-long internship at any time.

Imitation desired: pilot project fights teaching shortfalls - with success

This pilot project kills several birds with one stone: it helps to combat teacher shortages and teaching absences, it gives trainee teachers more practical experience and it establishes concepts for modern learning. So far, the project, which was developed by TU Dresden, has primarily supported schools in eastern Saxony that are severely affected by the shortage of teachers. However, other federal states could also benefit from the innovative approach.

Weil Lehrer fehlen, fallen in der Region viele Schulstunden aus. Dank der Studis können die Schüler die Zeit trotzdem zum Üben nutzen. Nach den Ferien soll das Projekt nun mit mehr als 60 Studierenden weitergehen, und zwar über ein ganzes Schuljahr. Professorin Anke Langner hat das Projekt ins Leben gerufen.

Man könnte das schon weiter ausbauen, dass praktisch alle Studierenden irgendwann eine Art von Kooperationsschule haben, in der sie praktisch zum Beispiel ab dem dritten Semester kontinuierlich in der Schule sind und damit ganz viel Sicherheit gewinnen in ihrem Handeln.

Sie haben ihr Studium weiterhin in Dresden, sind aber für den praktischen Teil hier vor Ort. Und das ist natürlich deutlich besser, als wenn sie ihren Praxisteil rund um die Ballungszentren, wo die Unis sind, absolvieren, sondern man hat sie dann hier schon während der Ausbildung in der Region gebunden. Und das wir eben jungen Menschen zeigen, dass es auch schön ist, hier zu leben und zu arbeiten und sie für den Lehrerberuf hier in der Region zu begeistern.

The start of the summer vacation marks the end of the first phase of a pilot project for student teachers. In May and June, they accompanied pupils learning at two secondary schools in Zittau and Weißwasser. For six weeks, the 14 trainee teachers were able to gain practical experience in this new format on Fridays and also reduce the number of lessons missed on site. TU Dresden is planning the second phase of the pilot project for the coming school year.

Die Richard-von-Schlieben-Oberschule in Zittau. Eigentlich wären die Mädchen und Jungen der fünften Klasse gerade wieder einmal sich selbst überlassen: Unterrichtsausfall. Stattdessen lösen sie Aufgaben gemeinsam mit 8 Lehramtsstudenten der TU Dresden. Das ist Teil eines Pilotprojektes an der Schule, Praxiserfahrung für Schülerbetreuung. Wir werden immer so ein bisschen gewarnt, dass das Referendariat ein ganz schöner Schrock für uns sein wird. Von daher war ich sehr froh, dass es das Angebot gab, dass wir hier die Praxiserfahrung machen können und es auch was ganz anderes als im Blockpraktikum, wo man ja hauptsächlich hospitiert, also dann sitzt man hinten drin und beobachtet viel. Und das ist auch sehr wichtig, dass man das lernt, aber es ist halt noch mal was ganz anderes, wenn man direkt mit den Kindern zusammenarbeiten kann.

Ich bin sehr glücklich. Also ist wirklich ein Herzenswunsch für mich gewesen, dass dieses Projekt umgesetzt wird. Das Projekt ist notwendig, weil jede Oberschule jede Schule hat, mittlerweile zu viele Stunden, die ausfallen. Also wir stehen vor einer riesengroßen Herausforderung.

Peggy Wolter: 16:30 Uhr Schönen guten Tag. Wie viele Schulstunden sind in diesem Jahr bereits bei ihrem Nachwuchs ausgefallen? Dabei können Eltern selbst das Addieren wieder üben. Wie Studenten die Lücken im Stundenplan an den Schulen füllen möchten: Wir stellen ein Pilotprojekt vor. Und: was alles zwischen Pflastersteinen und Mauerritzen so wächst, ist nicht immer Unkraut und geschweige denn namenlos. Wir waren in der Neißestadt auf Krautschau.

Peggy Wolter: Unterrichtsausfall ist leider an unseren Schulen keine Seltenheit. Schon bei der Planung bleiben Stunden leer. Das Problem: Lehrermangel. Um diese Situation irgendwie zu entschärfen, gibt es ein neues Projekt an zwei Oberschulen in Zittau und in Weißwasser. Studenten sollen einspringen, damit Schüler die verlorenen Stunden doch irgendwie sinnvoll nutzen. Anke Langner ist Professorin der Erziehungswissenschaft an der TU Dresden. Was ist das für ein Projekt?
Anke Langner: Also ich würde immer sagen, es gibt auf alle Fälle zwei Seiten. Na klar gibt es die Situation, dass Schülerinnen und Schüler vor allen Dingen in der ländlichen Region relativ hohe Ausfallquoten des Unterrichts haben und dass natürlich, wenn das über einen längeren Zeitraum passiert, auch zu einer Benachteiligung der Schülerinnen und Schüler dort führt.
Die andere Situation ist, dass zukünftige Lehrerinnen und Lehrer häufig darüber klagen, dass das, was Sie in der Universität machen, das ist halt immer nur Theorie, und häufig hat diese Theorie nichts mit der Praxis zu tun. Also wie schaffen wir es, dass zukünftige Lehrerinnen und Lehrer besser in der Praxis ausgebildet werden? Und daraus ist die Idee entstanden zu sagen, naja, kann man das nicht miteinander verbinden? Kann man nicht ermöglichen, dass Studierende frühzeitig schon in der Praxis tätig sind? Vielleicht auch nicht als klassischer Lehrer tätig, sind in einem Fachunterricht, sondern in anderen Formaten und gleichzeitig wird damit Schülerinnen und Schülern in Schulen, wo es einen hohen Lehrermangel gibt, eine tagesstrukturierende Maßnahme - würde ich das immer als Wissenschaftlerin beschreiben - um Lernen zu lernen angeboten.
Peggy Wolter: Gute Idee. Wie soll das jetzt in der Praxis umgesetzt werden, dass Studenten und Schüler zusammenkommen?
Anke Langner: Das heißt, an einem Tag, in dem Fall jetzt an dem Freitag, übernehmen Studierende, und zwar vier an der Zahl, in einer Klasse, und zwar in dem fünften Jahrgang, eine ganze Klasse. Sie begleiten diese Schülerinnen und Schüler dieser Klasse von der ersten bis einschließlich der sechste Unterrichtsstunde an einem Freitag. Und sie fangen in der Regel so an, dass sie erst mal mit den Schülerinnen und Schüler bearbeiten, was ist denn heute das Ziel des Arbeitens. Dann ist ein anderes Thema, das verstehende Lesen von Schülerinnen und Schülern, das immer schlechter wird. Deswegen haben wir ein Format installiert, wo die Schülerinnen und Schüler im Tandem miteinander lesen. Auch das wird begleitet von den Studierenden. Und weil die Studierenden zu viert in einer Klasse sind, haben sie nur sieben Schülerinnen und Schüler, die sie begleiten müssen. Es findet also keine klassische frontale Situation statt, sondern die Schüler arbeiten in kleineren Gruppen miteinander.
Peggy Wolter: Das heißt, die Studenten ersetzen also nicht die ausgefallenen Stunden.
Anke Langner: Richtig, also sie ersetzen nicht den klassischen Matheunterricht. Aber sie können, weil gerade in Mathematikunterricht Bruchrechnung stattgefunden hat, natürlich klassische Übungsformate mit den Schülerinnen und Schülern machen und die Schülerinnen und Schüler signalisieren uns zumindest bisher, dass das total viel Spaß macht, weil es natürlich ein anderes Setting ist zu lernen. Aber wichtig ist: sie lernen zu lernen, damit sie, je älter sie werden - in der Schule wird noch ein bisschen länger der Lehrermangel wahrscheinlich uns begleiten - auch deutlich stärker und selbstwirksamer selbst lernen können.
Peggy Wolter: Verständlich, den Schülern ist geholfen. Wie ist bisher das Feedback bei den Studenten?
Anke Langner: Na, die Studierenden sind sehr begeistert. Ich glaube, einige haben auch schon gefragt, ob sie das länger vollziehen dürfen, also in der Schule bleiben. Und zwar ist das Positive, dass sie merken, wie sie selber in den Prozess hineinwachsen, also in das Unterrichten. Sie finden das sehr angenehm, dass sie nicht eine Gruppe von 28 Schülerinnen und Schülern vor sich haben. Sie finden es auch sehr angenehm, dass sie sich mit anderen rückversichern können und Rücksprache führen können, weil sie sind zu viert und sie planen das auch zu viert. Sie können auch jederzeit im Unterricht, natürlich auf den anderen Mal verweisen, wenn man selber nicht weiterkommt.
Peggy Wolter: Bis zum Ende des Schuljahres kommen Schüler und Studenten an 2 Oberschulen in Zittau und Weißwasser noch zusammen. Bei dem Pilotprojekt gegen Stundenausfall Dankeschön für das Gespräch Professorin der Erziehungswissenschaft Anke Langner.

Experiences from the semester-accompanying internship at the University School Dresden
The pilot project in East Saxony benefits from the experience that students have already gained at Dresden University School during their semester-long internship. Together with the students and the school community, the academic director of the school experiment, Prof. Anke Langner, is developing the format further.

The increasing challenges in the education system, in particular the shortage of teachers in rural regions, are once again bringing the practical orientation of teacher training courses into focus. Against this backdrop, the "Alternative Teaching Internship" project was developed at the Technical University of Dresden, which is testing a new type of long-term internship during the semester. The associated stress and the students' experience of the internship were investigated in an explorative, triangulative evaluation combining qualitative and quantitative data. With the help of questionnaires and group discussions, students were asked about their experiences of stress, their competence gains and their subjective perception of the internship. The questionnaires were also completed by students on regular block placements, enabling a group comparison. In addition, school stakeholders were asked about their perception of the students' development, as well as the challenges and conditions for success of the project implementation. The results indicate both potential and differences between the groups of students with clear effect sizes as well as challenges in project implementation. In particular, a change in the theory-practice relationship is discussed critically. The results provide an empirical basis for the further development and possible continuation of the format in the 2025/26 school year.

The shortage of teachers in Saxony is not an abstract problem for the future, but has long been a daily reality for many towns and municipalities. Despite numerous measures at a state level - from civil servant status and lateral entry to regionalized training - attracting young teachers remains a challenge. Many schools, particularly in rural areas, lack trained
teachers - with the result that timetables have to be cut. For pupils in rural areas, this often means a significantly shorter school day than for their peers in the big city. At the same time, the burden on the remaining teachers is constantly increasing due to substitute teaching, staff shortages and the large number of additional tasks.
Mayors are asking themselves the question: What can cities and municipalities do in concrete terms to attract young trainee teachers and not lose quality as a place to live and do business because of the schools? Two projects – Perspective Countryside (PerLA) and Alternative Teaching Internship at Selected Schools in Eastern Saxony (ALSO) – aiming at student teachers are used to outline possible ways of helping to shape the local situation.

The discussion about the poor integration of theory and practice in teacher training is not new, and the cyclical emergence of a shortage of teachers is also something familiar in the discourse of educational science. This article will present how both challenges can complement each other in a crisis situation and open up new creative spaces. To this end, the piloting of the deployment of student teachers one day a week in the rural region will be traced by determining both the implementation and the findings from the pilot as well as the design of a further implementation phase.
