Professional internship
Internship seminar
The seminar is aimed at students in the first semesters of their Bachelor's and
Master's program in order to provide them with orientation and structuring assistance regarding internship planning and implementation and to give them perspectives on possible internship during and after their sociology studies.
and careers after their sociology studies.
The seminar is a compulsory course in the Bachelor's program GKS - 1st HF Sociology.
The seminar has four main focuses:
- General information on the structure, organization and content of the
internship in the BA degree program and the free module Professional Practice in the
MA degree program. This information is derived a) from the formal
formal regulations (study and examination regulations) and b) the experience gained. - An essential component is reports from the practical experience itself. For this purpose experts present various social fields of action and organization (e.g. education
(e.g. education, industry, administration) and report on what can ideally be achieved,
but also what experience shows you can do with a sociological education in the respective areas of activity. - The third component is experience reports from the students, who report on their internship after completion in the form of presentation-based talks.
- The last component links the internship to the content of the sociology course by providing insights into various social science perspectives on the internship in several sessions. The aim here is to view the internship as a social event from the perspectives of work, organizational, life course sociology and psychology. Special consideration is also given here to the graduate studies of the TU Dresden and other studies on the professional career prospects of sociologists.
Enrolment for the internship seminar takes place via Opal.

Proof of internship and recognition
There are two ways to have your internship recognized:
- Presentation in the internship seminar on the content of your internship and your experiences with the field of work (submission of the short form "Internship report" as part of the presentation plus contract, work reference and pre-filled form "Proof of internship")
- Submission of the complete written internship report of 8-10 pages (plus contract, reference and pre-filled form "Internship report"). Please do not send any documents by e-mail! Instead, submit your certificate, contract and report via OPAL. The pre-filled internship certificate must be printed out and sent to the institute's secretariat (room FAL 217, use the letterbox in front of it).
In the Bachelor's degree course GKS - 1. HF Sociology, recognition takes place within the framework of an ungraded complex performance consisting of an essay on the topic "The internship from a sociological perspective, taking into account aspects of life course, work and organizational sociology" and one of the two options mentioned above (lecture with short form or written internship report).
Please note that only complete documents can be processed.
Approximately 2 to 3 weeks after uploading your documents, they will be processed by us. If all requirements are met, we will forward the signed internship certificate directly to the Examination Office. In this case, you will not receive any notification from us. If documents are missing or the requirements are otherwise not met, you will receive an email from us and the opportunity to submit missing documents or revise an insufficient internship report.
Important note on the internship report
A central aim of the internship is for you to apply and reflect on the content you have learned during your studies in the working world. Therefore, an important point in the internship report is a "critical appraisal of the internship with regard to the study objective".
This means that you critically reflect on your internship against the background of your sociology studies, which also means that you relate the content of your internship to the content of your studies (e.g. various sociological theories, authors, etc.) and make this clear with appropriate references (references and bibliography).
