#52 Speed dating // Village fair 2.0

What people normally do in a speed dating format with a view to finding a partner has been around for a long time as a more general discussion format - including conferences or workshops. The more general speed dating format works in a similar way to the romantic format with time-limited conversations on more or less narrowly defined topics. Two people sit opposite each other at different tables and have (e.g. three minutes) to talk to each other. As soon as a bell rings or another acoustic noise is heard, one person moves to the next table. The other person remains seated and gets a new conversation partner in the next round.

We can also imagine a speed dating event like this at a village festival, where it can be worthwhile collecting current topics in advance that affect and interest as many different people in the village as possible. Conflictual topics should, if possible, be introduced via questions that enable respectful communication and reduce the potential for escalation (e.g. conversational needs in the covid-related environment could be directed towards sharing personal experiences, resources, needs and support options).

In addition to the festival participants, people in decision-making positions could also be invited in a targeted manner to take part in speed dating. A loud and colorful promotion of the speed dating offer at the start time can help to attract other interested people on site as participants. This gives them the opportunity to give their topics and needs a small audience. We think this is a great way to promote democratic experience (also) at the village fair.
