Research profiles and activities of the institute are broadly diversified and comprise, for example, foci in the areas of gender research (Gender Studies, Masculinity Studies, Transgender and Intersex Studies), research of popcultural representations of history, representations of the American and Canadian West, post-postmodern narration in old and new media as well as research in foreign language acquisition. Conferences and research colloquia are held regularly and students are invited to participate.
Since its foundation in 1993, the institute has forged connections with a number of universities in Great Britain, the United States, India, and other countries at which students are welcomed to spend time abroad. For this purpose, special programmes and funding opportunities are being provided. Additionally, the institute regularly offers excursions to Great Britian and project studies in the US.
