Guidelines for student-led courses
a) Formal procedure
- Discuss details of the session preparation (duration, procedure, documentation, use of media, etc.) with the lecturer in good time.
- Do not forget to cite sources!
b) Prevent boring presentations
1. be clear!
- Clear content structure in:
- Introduction (hook/current reference)
- Main part (2-3 bullet points with the most important information)
- Conclusion: Summary, conclusion and transition to the discussion
2. be descriptive!
- Make the content structure clear
- Use examples (first the example, then the explanation)
- Make references to practice/your own world (personal experiences, anecdotes...)
- Visualize (maps, charts, tables, pictures...)
- Bring authentic material (teaching material, brochures...)
- Use visual and audio material
3. activate the seminar participants!
- Ask questions that go beyond pure knowledge questions (analysis, synthesis, assessment, transfer, problem solving, etc.)
- Possible function of the questions: ensuring understanding, working together, attentive listening, etc.
- Incorporate exercises and tasks
- Put into practice what has been learned/presented
4. lead a targeted discussion!
- Do not go into the discussion unprepared
- Set goals: What conclusions should the participants come to?
- Pre-formulate questions
- Carefully consider answers and possible alternative answers
5. face the feedback!
- Listen without having to defend yourself (it's about subjective opinion, not about true or false!)
- Develop an inner willingness to see your own behavior through the eyes of others
- Implement criticism step by step in the next presentation
- Do not express generalized criticism, but personal opinions
- Always remain respectful and constructive
- Also express what has attracted positive attention and show appreciation for it
