As part of the TU Dresden - Belmont University exchange programme, for the past 14 years, the Department of English has offered short study visits of approximately 10 days to Belmont University, Nashville, USA. The faculty has supported participating students with financial bursaries, which have usually covered at least 50% of the travel costs, and Belmont University generously offers free accommodation for the stay. These visits have primarily taken place in March during the semester break, and students have been able to combine these study visits with other visits in the USA, e.g. to friends, host families etc.
These study visits have mostly been organised and supervised by the language teaching staff: in the Magister and Lehramt study programmes at the TU Dresden students were obliged to take at least one elective course (an extra language course chosen from several options), and at least every two years the department offered a project course which culminated in a study visit to Nashville.
We have had two kinds of projects: in some years students followed a particular interest of their own that was relevant to their studies, whereas in other visits all the participating students collaborated on one topic, each being allocated different areas to investigate, e.g. in 2007 the group studied the phenomenon of fraternities and sororities at American universities.
The aims of this study visit are
- to give students the opportunity to apply and extend their language and academic skills in real and demanding situations with native speakers (e.g. interview a state senator)
- to encourage intensive working situations in an English-speaking country which should provide valuable cultural insights and personal contacts
- to provide work experience (establishing parameters, analysing and evaluating information, co-operation with fellow students, writing of a report, presentation of material etc) which is valuable for most careers
- to produce an extended piece of work or report which also forms the basis of a class presentation to fellow students back in Dresden.
