Award of an honorary professorship to Prof Juergen Czarske, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST)
Professor Juergen Czarske, head of the professorship for measurement and sensor systems technology (MST) at TU Dresden, was honored with the highest award of the University of Science and Technology (USST). Prof Czarske was awarded an honorary professorship during the International Conference on Neuromorphic Photonics 2024 on November 23, 2024 by Prof Zhang Zhong, Vice President of USST, 516 Jungong Rd, Shanghai. Neuromorphic photonics is inspired by biological neural networks and plays an important role in electrical and information engineering. The importance of neural network research was highlighted also at the award of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics to John J. Hopfield(Princeton University), Geoffrey Hinton (University of Toronto) “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks”. The Neuromorphic Photonics Conference has enabled a high-level international academic exchange, also through the involvement of the chief senior editors of Nature Photonics, Nature Communications and other journals. The honorary professor award was presented at an academic ceremony that highlighted the cooperation with Professor Min Gu (Executive Chancellor of the University Council and Distinguished Professor of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, USST). Prof Gu and Prof Czarske won both the SPIE Dennis Gabor Award in Diffractive Optics (2019 and 2024, respectively, SPIE: International Society for Optics and Photonics), which recognized the paradigm shifts achieved in holography. Prof Gu and Czarske are both Fellows of OPTICA (The Optical Society, Washington, DC, USA), SPIE (The International Society for Optics and Photonics, Bellingham, WA, USA) and Institute of Physics (London, UK). Prof Gu served as “appointed Vice President of the Board of the International Commission for Optics (ICO)”, while Prof Czarske is right now serving as “elected Vice President of ICO”, just elected for the 2nd period in Cape Town, October 2024. The ICO is committed to promoting exchange in optics and photonics worldwide, with particular support for developing countries towards dissemination of knowledge and skills for a better world. About the person: Prof. Prof. h. c. Dr.-Ing. habil. Juergen Czarske The university lecturer is one of the nationally and internationally sought-after experts in laser systems, measurement technology and computational imaging. The head of the professorship for measurement and sensor systems https://tu-dresden.de/ing/elektrotechnik/iee/mst at TU Dresden has been involved for many years as an assessor, reviewer and in voluntary work. For example, he was a member of the German Research Foundation (DFG) review board for over eight years and is active in the Senate of TU Dresden. Prof Czarske is editor of Light Science and Applications, Advanced Photonics, Light Advanced Manufacturing and other journals as well as a reviewer for numerous journals and funding institutions. He has supported Jugend Forscht as a juror and Prof Czarske has organized a large number of conferences. In 2022, he was general chair of the World Congress of the International Commission for Optics (ICO-25), which brought 3 Nobel Prize winners and participants from 55 countries from all continents to Dresden. In 2023, the Digital Optical Technologies conference of the SPIE (The international society for Optics and Photonics) was organized together with Bernard Kress (Director at Google) in Munich and in 2024 the Frontiers in Optics 1 conference of the OPTICA (The Optical Society) was organized in Denver.
