Challenge
During the development of CPPS or their components, development engineers deal with different software applications. These applications generate specific data, describing aspects of the future system (e.g. geometrical embodiment, control model, human machine interface, thermal radiation) in a digital way. All these data represent the digital prototype of the CPPS.
For some time now it has been possible to review product geometries and check their functionality by means of VR and AR. Compared to a representation using conventional displays, VR and AR offer the advantages of 3D perception of the real-sized objects and natural interaction with the digital prototype. Today, substantial time and work is required for preparing a review in VR and AR. As model preparation takes so much time, often the underlying data no longer reflect the current state of development. Furthermore, a complete description of CPPS must include information on controls and user behaviour as it is inadequately represented in VR presentations today.
The thesis defines a structure model with all the information needed to integrate or link the data volumes of various application programs generated during the development process. The model integrates these data by mapping them to generic descriptions that are to be defined. These descriptions must be readable by VR and AR applications, enabling an efficient VR and AR presentation of a continuously evolving product and its behaviour. The descriptions of the product geometry, material and functionality should be extended by aspects of control and user interaction. Flexible interface configurations and adaptive user interaction can be provided and tested in early stages of the development of CPPS.
