Gesamtkunstwerk
Summer semester 2022 studio/workshop led by Jun. Prof. Theda Nilsson with students from Dresden Academy of Fine Arts (HfBK) and TU Dresden Informatik faculty.
Gesamtkunstwerk can be understood as a "total" work of art in which different artistic forms, media and processes are synthesised into a single cohesive whole. The idea was famously popularized by the composer Richard Wagner, who argued for the "consummate artwork of the future," where "no one rich faculty of the separate arts will remain unused in the Gesamtkunstwerk of the Future". Remaining most popular in Germany and Austria, the concept was developed throughout the 19th and into the early 20th century by a range of European art movements and became a core tenet of modern art.
In summer semester 2022, Prof. Theda Nilsson and her students at the HfBK will explore the full width of the notion of the Gesamtkunstwerk, with particular a focus on collective and collaborative processes. How can a gesamtkunstwerk emerge from collective processes, and can the format be used to reinforce egalitarian and democratic aspects in the creation of theatrical work?
The workshop will explore the use of the state-of-the-art in immersive and online media in a theatrical production. You will collaborate with theatre, art and set design students from Dresden Academy of Fine Arts (HfBK) in the design and production of a theatrical work. The final work will be presented publicly at the end of semester.
This is a wondeful opportunity for Informatik students to gain experience working in a multi-disciplinary creative team composed of actors, set design and art students.
The course is open to Bachelor, Diploma and Master students in Informatik, Medieninformatik and CMS. You can register the workshop for 4 SWS credit as "Komplexpraktikum" in any of the following modules:
