In this workshop, we examine the numerous technical, design and interaction challenges faced when creating immersive applications and systems in real-world contexts. We will work closely with experts, practitioners or researchers in different domains who face a task or problem that might be solved or improved through the use of immersive media technologies, and develop prototype applications. This might be in fields as diverse as archaeology, architecture, data visualisation, geospatial science, physiotherapy or psychotherapy, museums and libraries, music and film production, journalism or education and training.

In this practical course we will investigate different aspects and applications of immersive audio in augmented and virtual reality. We will experiment with different technical approaches to the capture and rendering of sonic environments, and explore concepts of spatialisation and localisation, perceptual and cognitive coherence, and different dimensions of presence and realness through the creation of augmented and virtual reality prototypes.

This seminar + praktikum is intended primarily for students intending to write a bachelor or master thesis in the field of immersive media.
It provides an introduction to academic research methodologies and tools (e.g. academic search strategies, managing a bibliography, academic writing styles), and exposure to recent research results and the current outstanding challenges in the fields of virtual and augmented reality and immersive media.
Students will be given the opportunity to select and refine a thesis topic, familiarise themselves with the relevant technologies, and then prepare extensively the theoretical and technical components of the thesis.

An introduction to the current frontiers of research in the field of immersive media.
In this seminar we will survey recent research results and the current outstanding challenges in the fields of virtual and augmented reality and immersive media. This includes perceptual factors, technical developments (e.g real-time rendering and simulation, embodied virtual agents, virtual world building, 3D user interfaces, immersive visual, audio and haptic displays) and emerging applications (e.g. psychiatry, education, journalism).
The seminar will also provide an introduction to techniques, tools and methodologies for researching and writing academic literature (e.g. search tools, managing a bibliography, academic writing styles)
Students will perform a literature survey on a specific topic and give a presentation within the seminar.
(If COVID allows, the seminar will also offer the opportunity to experience a number of VR experiences.)
