BAföG / Finances
Sorry - this document is available in German only.
Applications for BAföG are made via the Studentenwerk.
From the 5th semester onwards, training support for attendance at a higher technical college, academy or university will only be paid from the point in time when the trainee has submitted either a certificate confirming that he or she has passed an intermediate examination or a certificate (form 5) issued by the training institution after the start of the 4th semester that he or she has achieved the usual performance during the 4th or the respective semester.
The certificates shall be deemed to have been submitted at the end of the previous semester if they are presented within the first four months of the following semester and it is clear from them that the achievements listed therein were already achieved in the previous semester.
If you are requested by the BAföG office to submit the certificate according to §48 BAföG (form 5), then please bring/send the request as well as the form 5 to the examination office. Our Examination Office submits the certificate (form 5) to the relevant Examination Committee, which will confirm this according to the status of the services rendered.
For the study programmes introduced since 2009, the credit points already earned are used as the basis for a confirmation of Form 5. If you have acquired at least 80% of the credit points to be acquired according to the regular study plan in your subject semester (LPmax), you will be confirmed that you have achieved the "usual" credits (see table below). This is to take into account the fact that, especially in the case of modules which extend over several semesters, the credit points are only acquired after passing the corresponding module examination at the end of the respective module.

If a trainee is unable to prove the level of performance required under § 48 (1) BAföG, he/she has the opportunity to submit an application for later submission. The relevant regulation for this in § 48, paragraph 2 BAföG is
If there are facts which are likely to justify a later exceeding of the maximum duration of support in accordance with § 15, paragraph 3, the Office for Training Support may permit the certificate to be submitted at a correspondingly later date.
Facts which initially justify the granting of educational assistance without presentation of the positive certificate shall be deemed to exist if the delay in training has occurred for serious reasons, as a result of participation in statutory bodies and statutory bodies of higher technical colleges, academies, universities and the Länder, as well as in statutory bodies of student self-administration at these training institutions and the student services, as a result of failure to pass the final examination for the first time, as a result of a disability, pregnancy or the care and upbringing of a child for up to ten years.
In the cases mentioned here, it is always advisable to seek advice in the office. Information on this and the deduction form can be obtained from the BAföG office.
