Examinations
The lecture period typically lasts until the first week in February, after which you have time to prepare for exams on your own. Examinations and the RoboLab take place during the lecture-free period.
There will be study rooms for most subjects, the dates of which will be announced on notice boards in the foyer in good time.
Examinations in the Bachelor's degree programs are held in the first semester for the following subjects/modules:
- Introduction to Mathematics 2,
- Algorithms and Data Structures,
- RoboLab,
- Introduction to Media Computer Science.
The examinations in the first semester for the diploma course are:
- RoboLab and Programming of Strategy Games (2 exams),
- Introduction to Mathematics 2,
- Algorithms and data structures,
- Technical Fundamentals (examination: written exam).
The examinations in computer architecture and the hardware practical course of the module Technical Fundamentals and Hardware Practical Course take place after the second semester according to the standard study schedule. All other times for module examinations can be found in the respective study schedule(Bachelor Computer Science, Bachelor Media Computer Science, Diploma Computer Science). The specific examination dates are published on the Examination Office website. You must register for the examinations.
Please note that the registration period for the examinations is limited. It is not possible to register at a later date. However, you can deregister from a written examination up to 3 working days before the examination.
The examination period at the Faculty of Computer Science generally always begins at the start of the lecture-free period and lasts approximately four weeks.
Please note, however, that the RoboLab in the Bachelor's degree programs in Computer Science and Media Computer Science as well as the Diploma program in Computer Science is completed after the examination period as a block internship during the semester break.
Examinations in the modules INF-B-5*0 do not have the character of a complex examination, but each course is examined individually. In order to complete the modules, examinations of (at least) 8 SWS must be completed in the module.
Yes, according to the new University Law of Saxony (§21, section 3), students are also allowed to take academic and examination credits during the semester of holiday. However, leave of absence is only approved for important reasons.
In general, it is possible to cancel without giving reasons up to three working days before a written form and up to two weeks before oral and other examinations without giving reasons.
Example: On Monday, a written form examination is to take place from which you wish to cancel your registration. In this case you must register your withdrawal from the examination by 23:59 hrs on Wednesday of the previous week.
If you have registered via jExam for the exam you want to withdraw from, you can also cancel your registration there. In the case of oral examinations registered via the Examinations Office, deregistration is carried out via the Examinations Office. If you have arranged an examination date with a university teacher, you will generally have to cancel the date within the specified period of time at the respective secretariat.
In case of withdrawal due to illness, the Request for withdrawal from examinations due to illness and the Medical Certificate form must be used. These certificates must be submitted in the original, no later than 5 business days after the examination date, and can be sent by post or inserted in one of the available official letterboxes/deadline mailboxes of the TUD. It is not possible to send them by e-mail.
The official letterboxes at the TU Dresden for medical certificates with deadlines can be found here.
The envelope must contain the complete address (see below), otherwise the letters cannot be correctly assigned and your withdrawal cannot take effect:

These letterboxes are emptied daily by the postal service and are date stamped.
In principle, a withdrawal due to illness must be asserted *before* the examination. Declarations of withdrawal which are only received by the examination board after the examination date without participation in the examination and which are based on reasons which already existed before the examination date cannot be accepted.
If you take part in an examination, you are declaring that you are fit to take the examination without being able to subsequently claim that you have health problems.
Finally, we draw your attention to the fact that your withdrawal only becomes legally binding once it has been approved by the examination board. If the resignation is not approved by the examination board, you will receive a written form with instructions on how to appeal.
It is called withdrawal from an examination if the deadline for deregistration without giving reasons has already passed. The withdrawal must be notified to the head of the examination board immediately in written form and must be made plausible. Further information on withdrawal can be found here.

If a module examination is taken before the semester specified in the study plan, it is considered as a free attempt. A module examination which is not passed in the free attempt is considered as not taken. A module examination passed in the free attempt can be repeated once on the next regular examination date to improve the grade. The better mark then counts.
Please note that if you let the next regular examination date pass, it is no longer possible to improve your grade.
First of all, it is important to distinguish whether it is an examination in a module with several or only one examination!
- For a module that concludes with one examination, if the examination is not passed, this attempt at the module examination is assessed as "failed" and must be repeated.
- In the case of a module with several examinations (e.g. the math modules INF-[B|D]-110 and INF-[B|D]-120), all examinations required in the module must first be completed. The module grade is then determined. If this module grade is 4.1 or worse, this attempt at the module examination is deemed to have been failed. In the case of a retake, only those examinations that were not passed in the previous module examination attempt can be repeated. Examinations that have already been passed cannot be repeated.
If you fail a module examination, you will be notified accordingly (i.e. an official notification will be sent to your address stored in selma). This notification will also include the deadline for the repeat examination.
Repeat examination 1 (WH1): Module examinations that have not been passed can be repeated once within one year after completing the first examination attempt. (Written examinations are usually offered every semester at the Faculty of Computer Science. It is therefore possible to retake these examinations after just one semester).
Repeat examination 2 (WH2): A second repeat examination must be taken at the next possible examination date after WH1. If this is also not passed, the module examination is deemed to have been definitively failed.
(The examination dates are usually published on the faculty website).
Please note that repeating a module examination that has been passed is not permitted.
No. The module examination is generally passed if the (possibly weighted) average of the relevant examination credits is at least "sufficient" (4.0) (see also Compensation of examination credits).
The compensation (or compensability) of examinations refers to module examinations with several examinations. Unless otherwise stated in the module descriptions, the module grade determined must be at least "sufficient" (4.0) to pass the module. A module examination consisting of several examinations can be passed if the grades of the individual examinations are weighted accordingly, even if one of the examinations is not passed.
The Admissions Office carries out the exmatriculation ex officio at the end of the semester.
Forms for the crediting of academic and examination achievements can be found on the forms page of the examination office. The original copies of proof of academic achievements as well as the respecting course descriptions must also be submitted or presented to the Examinations Office upon submission of the application. The examination board decides whether the subject recognition is to be carried out by a university teacher responsible for the subject.
Please note the information on this page regarding the recognition of academic and examination achievements in the course of a change of degree programme.
Open examination procedures must be specified in the application for the crediting of academic and examination achievements in the course of a change of degree programme.
→ These include all examinations for which registration has been received and which have not yet been successfully completed or for which no grades have yet been given.
