TU Dresden and Citrine Informatics collaborate on fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) components research
DRESDEN, Germany - Technische Universität Dresden and Citrine Informatics have announced a materials research collaboration. Citrine has partnered with the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology (ILK-TUD), whose spectrum of activities covers a wide range from fundamental research to collaborations with leading automotive and aerospace companies.
The partnership between TU Dresden and Citrine focuses on better understanding the effect of process and environmental variables on the mechanical properties of fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) components. Two datasets generated by ILK-TUD are being considered, covering extensive manufacturing data of an overmolded FRP component, as well as surface-preparation data for a lab-scale testing geometry. Utilizing the Citrine Platform, data driven analysis of the process property relationship will facilitate the optimization of manufacturing processes used for structural automotive components.
Prof. Gude, chair of Lightweight Systems Engineering and Multi Material Design at ILK-TUD, highlights that, "we develop complex manufacturing process chains for lightweight components and systems. In doing so, it is important to transfer our material and process understanding into the entire development chain of hybrid fiber composite structures (material design - structural design - simulation - manufacturing - cost analysis - prototype testing - quality assurance).”
“The partnership is expected to support us in linking process data across processing steps, enhancing our understanding of the relationships, and particularly in evaluating the impact on the resulting structural behavior.” emphasizes Dr. Andreas Hornig, co-head Computational Methods and Simulation at ILK-TUD.
“This work will demonstrate the application of a materials-aware informatics machine learning solution to a real-world, noisy manufacturing parameter dataset,” said Dr. James Saal, Citrine’s Director of External Research Programs, “Optimizing manufacturing processes is a common problem and we will show that using Citrine’s machine learning tools can address these tasks successfully.”
