TUD at the German-Korean Junior Forum in Korea
From October 25th to November 5th, 2023, the TU Dresden has the honour to present Dipl.-Ing. Leon Schröder as a representative of the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology (ILK) at the German-Korean Junior Forum (DKJF) in Korea. | Further to the Call for Proposals DKJF 2023.
The trip was part of an intercultural exchange in which 25 Germans and 25 Koreans between 18 and 27 years met, got to know each other, and discussed hot issues in a bilateral context.
The trip began with an introductory seminar in Seoul from October 26th to 31st, which not only included a cultural program in the fascinating metropolis, but also provided impressive insights into the border region and the Demilitarized Zone. The agenda was varied, ranging from temple visits and traditional Korean food to discussions with political decision-makers, including representatives of the German government and NK News.
The highlight was undoubtedly the Junior Forum in Busan from November 1st to 3rd. The participants were divided into five groups of 10, so that different disciplines came together in the discussions, including Korean Studies, International Relations, Political Science, Forestry, Mechanical Engineering, Business Administration, and even an excellent trainee.
Dipl.-Ing. Leon Schröder, a graduate of the study field Lightweight Engineering, participated in Group 1 with a focus on "Climate and Sustainable Energy". His personal goal was to contribute his engineering knowledge to the debate. Among the demands was the phasing out of nuclear energy in Korea and the increased development of renewable energy. The importance of joint research and technology transfer between the two countries was emphasized, especially in the context of renewable energy and battery technologies. These specific demands also reflect the commitment of TU Dresden to work internationally for a sustainable future. Participation in the DKJF thus provided an opportunity to develop solutions together across disciplinary boundaries.
When asked about surprising findings during the forum, Leon referred to the Korean government's stance on nuclear energy, which is with the approach of active expansion in stark contrast to the German policy. Regarding cultural differences between Germany and Korea, he emphasized that there were only minor differences, especially among internationally networked students. Rather, they are to be found in small things, such as certain forms of politeness. Special moments during the forum for him were the discussions with Mr. Young-Soo Kim, the project manager of the Hans Seidel Foundation, and Mr. Martin Dulig, the Saxon State Minister, who showed great interest in the exchange with all participants.
With a focus on interdisciplinary exchange and the development of policy recommendations, the German-Korean Junior Forum created an open platform for innovative ideas and excellent international cooperation.
We are delighted that the next forum will take place in Dresden. We hope for an equally successful participation and interdisciplinary cooperation as in 2023. | Further, visit the Website Young Generation Network Germany-Korea.
