Advanced Geometric Modeling and Analysis

The research group deals with research topics on advanced methods of geometry synthesis and analysis. These include generative design processes with a focus on algorithmic and simulation-based methods. There are also interfaces to other scientific disciplines (simulation, lightweight construction, chemical plant engineering, biology, medicine, etc.) in order to meet the respective development and process requirements. Another area of research concerns modern geometry analysis methods. Analysis techniques of reverse engineering with the basic process techniques of geometry digitization up to reverse engineering are considered.
Furthermore, the group deals with the integration of research topics in industrially and socially relevant areas. These include fields of application in the medical sector, such as the planning, design and production of individual prosthetics (e.g. bone replacement). There is also a focus on additive manufacturing processes, in particular design methods (Design4AM), geometry-adaptive slicing strategies and the printing of bone cements. All topics are covered in current courses.

- Discrete geometric data (point clouds, triangle meshes, voxel data)
- Geometric forms of representation (e.g. NURBS / B-rep, CSG tree, implicit and discrete shapes)
- Algorithmic processing and generation of geometric data
- Implicit and explicit forms of description for generating geometries (signed distance field methods)
- Advanced design methods for additive manufacturing (Design4AM - e.g. grid and wall structures, minimal surfaces)
- Generative design methods and algorithmically described structures
- Interfaces to simulation methods, data transfer in an engineering context
- Working with 3D scan data from various capture systems
- 3D acquisition methods in the sense of reverse engineering (triangulation-based surface acquisition, computer tomography)
- Methods of reverse engineering (fitting, approximation, free-form surfaces)

- Geometry analysis and design strategies in a medical context
- Assistance systems for geometry processing for various fields of application
- Transfer and use of (geometry) information from imaging processes such as computer tomography in virtual product development
