Founded in 1702 as a Jesuit college, the university currently has about 26,000 students and 1,300 doctoral students at ten faculties. The focus is on scientific research in the humanities and science.
The first university agreement between TU Dresden and University of Wrocław was established in 1997. Since 2014, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences has been expanding its strategic partnership with the University of Wrocław. The two universities also cooperate successfully in other disciplines, such as biochemistry and mathematics.
Politechnika Wrocławska was founded in 1945 and is today one of the largest and best technical universities in Poland. At 13 faculties, Politechnika Wrocławska offers a sophisticated range of subjects in science and engineering. Politechnika Wrocławska is a national leader in innovations and patent applications. It also has established cooperation agreements with domestic and foreign companies and is itself one of the largest employers in Wrocław.
Particularly well established cooperations between TU Dresden and Politechnika Wrocławska exist in the field of Science, Engineering Sciences, and Civil
and Environmental Engineering. In addition to the regular exchange of visiting scientists and students, joint research projects have already been realized, such as the TRAILS project for Mobile Innovation Laboratories and Services deepening Innovation Capacity in the Saxon-Polish Border Region.
Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences (WUELS), is one of the most specialized universities in Poland and was founded in 1951. Its five faculties focus on teaching and research in the field of agricultural and natural sciences as well as engineering and technical sciences. Since 2016, Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences has maintained a university cooperation with TU Dresden.
This cooperation has already resulted in several successful research projects. For example, the Institute of Landscape Architecture at TU Dresden is currently implementing a German-Polish model project on integrated cultural landscape development together with Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences. The university is also a strong research partner in food technology and is involved in the FERBLEND project, which deals with the prevention of production losses in food production.
Wrocław University of Economics and Business (WUEB) is not only an important research center in the field of economics and management, it is also one of the best business schools in Poland. Its research and teaching activities are based at the three faculties of Business and Management, Economics and Finance, and Production Engineering, as well as at a branch in Jelenia Góra.
Since 2018, the TU Dresden has been cooperating with Wrocław University of Economics and Business through its central scientific institution International Institute (IHI) Zittau within the framework of a two-degree program in the master's program in International Management.
Medical education has a long tradition in Wrocław. Already in the 13th century the first medical hospital was founded at a university. In 1745 the education of medical students began. The Wrocław Medical University was founded in 1946 and today represents one of the most prestigious medical universities in Poland. More than 5,000 students are currently enroled in the departments of human medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and public health.
The Wrocław Medical University has been a strategic partner of the School of Medicine at TU Dresden since 2014. In addition to several research projects, both universities participated with different disciplines in the cross-border format of the Saxon-Polish Innovation Day 2018 on the topic of "Personalized Biomedicine and Medical Technology".
Czech partner universities:
Univerzita Karlova is one of the oldest universities in the world. Founded in 1348 by Charles IV, it is the largest university in the Czech Republic with over 50,000 students and 17 faculties. Its scientific research focuses on the humanities, medicine and natural sciences.
The first university agreement between Univerzita Karlova and TU Dresden was concluded in 1992. Since then, cooperation has been established in the fields of Medicine, Humanities and Social Sciences as well as Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Univerzita Karlova is also a partner institution of TU Dresden in the DAAD Eastern Partnership Program.
The České vysoké učení technické v Praze (CVUT Prague) is one of the oldest technical universities in the world and is known for the outstanding achievements of its alumni in the fields of natural sciences and engineering. The university’s own patent centre illustrates its innovative strength. At the same time, strong links have been established in the field of technology transfer with industry partners in the greater Prague area.
Regarding TU Dresden, there are close links with CVUT Prague in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, where cooperation has existed in the Faculty of Transport Science since 2022. In addition, researchers from CVUT Prague and TU Dresden are working with four other European universities in the Open GLASSroom project on a joint, future-oriented curriculum for glass as a building material. For this purpose, the international research team develops open educational resources on the subject of glass design and technology.
The Česká zemědělská univerzita v Praze (CZU) is a specialized university whose 6 faculties focus on agricultural and forestry sciences in teaching and research. As the third largest university in Prague, it places particular emphasis on research into the efficient use of biomass and crops for food, chemicals, energy and fuels as defined by a biobased economy.
Together with TU Dresden and three other European universities, CZU is a partner in the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Global Forestry that aims to train future experts for the challenges of forestry in less developed and newly industrialized countries.
The University of Mechanical Engineering in Liberec was founded in 1953 to train qualified specialists for the local glass, plastics, textile and automotive supply industries. Since then, Technická univerzita v Liberci (TUL) has undergone a remarkable transformation into a medium-sized university with now 7 faculties and a specialized Institute. The primary goal of research activities at TUL is to apply technological innovations for the further development of the still heavily industrialized region.
Together with the IHI Zittau, the TUL is organized in the Central European Campus Neisse/Nisa and thus makes an important contribution to internationalization in the field of teaching and cooperation in the border region. Both institutions cooperate in the double degree program for the integrated Master's degree in International Management.
Founded in 1991, the Univerzita Jana Evangelisty Purkyně v Ústí nad Labem, or UJEP for short, bears the name of the Bohemian polymath and founder of modern physiology Jan Evangelista Purkyně (1787-1869). As the only university in the north-west of the Czech Republic, it plays an important role in science and technology transfer in the region with its research clusters in nanomaterials, material sciences and biotechnology as well as environmental sciences and regional studies, among others.
For this reason, the UJEP is an important partner of TU Dresden for joint research projects to strengthen the scientific, economic and social development of the border region. For example, in the Interreg project MATun, joint qualification programs are being developed in the field of materials science and the cost-intensive laboratory equipment is being shared in order to increase the breadth and quality of student education across borders.
The history of the Univerzita Pardubice is closely linked to the chemical industry in the East Bohemia region. From 1950 onwards, research and teaching for the highly developed chemical industry took place at the Institute of Chemical Technology in Pardubice. Since 1990, six more faculties have been established at the university. As a result, today's University of Pardubice offers a broad portfolio of subjects in Chemical Technologies, Electrical Engineering and Informatics, Business Administration and Economics, Health Sciences, Transport Sciences, Arts and Philosophy and Restoration.
IHI Zittau and the University of Pardubice have had a cooperation agreement for the double degree Master's in International Management since 2019.
