Marco Salvalaglio receives prestigious Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize
The German Research Foundation (DFG) has awarded Prof. Marco Salvalaglio from the Institute for Scientific Computing the prestigious Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize 2025. The prize is awarded for outstanding scientific achievements by researchers who are still at an early stage of their scientific careers. In addition to Salvalaglio, the DFG honored nine other scientists. The prize is endowed with 200,000 euros.
Research at the interface of solid state physics and applied mathematics
Salvalaglio works at the interface between solid-state physics, computational materials science and applied mathematics. His research focuses on the modeling and simulation of material properties. “In order to develop new and efficient materials, it is essential to understand their properties from the atomic to the macroscopic scale - in other words, from the smallest building blocks of the material to its coarser structure,” explains Salvalaglio. “I am deeply honored by this recognition. I see it not only as an acknowledgment of my work but also of the collaborative efforts of my colleagues and students. From my point of view, it underlines the value of multidisciplinary research, fostering collaborations between disciplines, faculties, and departments—an aspect I strongly believe enhances scientific progress. This award further motivates me to continue exploring new scientific challenges."
Based on the geometric arrangement of the atoms and molecules they contain, he investigates the behavior of materials and substances. The elastic and plastic behavior of metals is a particular focus of his work. In addition, he develops mathematical equations that allow him to model and efficiently simulate crystalline materials.
About the person:
Prof. Marco Salvalaglio was appointed TUD Young Investigator in 2021. In the same year, he was promoted to Junior Research Group Leader as part of the DFG's Emmy Noether Program. In 2024, he was awarded an adjunct professorship for Computational Materials Science.
The Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize:
The Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize is awarded annually to outstanding researchers who are at an early stage of their scientific careers. It has been named after the nuclear physicist and former DFG President Heinz Maier-Leibnitz since 1980 and is considered the most important prize in Germany for the promotion of scientific personalities at an early stage of their careers. Up to and including 2022, the DFG and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) awarded the prizes jointly. Since 2023, the DFG has awarded the prizes independently and the prize money has been increased from 20,000 to 200,000 euros per winner. The prize money can be used for further research work over a period of up to three years.
