The IAP and its collections
Like many institutions and departments of TU Dresden, the Institute of Applied Physics houses extensive collections of historical objects. Together they open up a unique panorama both of the early history of photography and of scientific photography as an important field of research and teaching.
One Institute - Three Collections
The Institute of Applied Physics houses three of the university’s historical collections. The Hermann Krone Collection contains significant works from the photographic oeuvre of Hermann Krone (1827-1916). The Scientific Photography Collection brings together historical equipment and objects related to the practice, research and teaching of photography. The Historical Collections traces the development of the Institute since 1907 through images and documents.
The Hermann Krone Collection in particular, being one of the most important sources on the early history of photography, has been the focus of various research projects and exhibitions.
Since 2017, the collections are held in the newly constructed Hermann Krone building, where they are housed in dedicated spaces. They regularly open their doors to the public for events and guided tours.
