Summary of Lecture: | The lecture will divide into three larger categories: A) Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and related techniques: Introduction; Historical view on the development of STM, Instrumentation: How to build an STM; STM tip preparation; physics of STM; STS and other STM-derived spectroscopy; Imaging artifacts and data processing; Atomic manipulation and single-molecule chemistry. B) Scanning Force Microscopy (SFM) and related techniques: SFM principle; cantilever resonances; methods of cantilever deflection detection; SFM implementation; contact, non-contact, and intermittent contact mode; SFM spatial resolution; force spectroscopy; SFM variants: friction force microcopy (FFM), Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), magnetic force microscopy (MFM), others; C) Scanning Near-Field Optical Microscopy (SNOM): SNOM principle of evanescent wave detection; Babinet principle (aperture and scattering SNOM); SNOM implementation; spatial resolution of SNOM; sub-surface imaging by SNOM; time resolved SNOM; investigation of plasmons, phonons, polaritons, etc.. | ||||||
