Application hints and tips
If, at the time of application, proof of the first degree qualifying the applicant for a profession is not yet available, the application will be considered under the precondition that 80% of the credit points attainable for the degree have already been achieved based on completed module examinations or the final thesis and the colloquium (if applicable). A certification from the awarding institute of higher education (examination office) serves as proof of the above-mentioned academic achievements. You can find the appropriate form on the Admissions Office website.
General information for the degree programme
The research-oriented master´s programme in Art History deals with the history of art from late antiquity to the present, with particular focus on the European and American cultural spheres. The programme considers a wide array of objects of study, from architecture and classical visual art to photography, film and other modern media. The course of study is closely connected to the practice of art history outside the university, thanks to the close cooperation with the Dresden State Art Collections (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden), the State Palaces, Castles, and Gardens, as well as several other outstanding cultural institutions in Dresden. Students are thereby introduced to museum work as well as research of the collections and monuments.
The core area consists of two mandatory basic modules: "Theory, Methods, Historiography" and "Practice and Analyses", followed by two mandatory advanced modules: "Theory, Methods, Historiography 2" or "Practice and Analyses 2" and “Study Trip” (including an 8-day-excursion). These modules can be complemented by interdisciplinary elective modules (according to individual, specialised research interests) and/or professional practical training in reputable scholarly institutions. In addition to the coursework, students have to write a master’s thesis.
