Dealing with harassment, discrimination and violence
TU Dresden views the diversity of its students and employees as a strength: Different experiences and perspectives enrich research, teaching, and campus life. TUD is therefore committed to fostering a respectful and appreciative community. All members of the university community should be able to participate on an equal footing—in an environment that is sensitive to discrimination and barriers.
However, societal power dynamics and disadvantages do not stop at the university gates. Here, too, people may experience discrimination, sexual harassment and violence, bullying, or stalking. Such experiences may be linked to actual or perceived characteristics and life circumstances.
The TU Dresden’s Code of Conduct sets forth a clear stance on this matter:
“Behavior that jeopardizes or disrupts the peaceful and respectful interaction among members, affiliates, and guests of the university, or that undermines the university’s free and tolerant atmosphere, is prohibited. This applies in particular to the use of insignia, symbols, and clothing with references that are unconstitutional, racist, xenophobic, glorify violence, or show contempt for other people.”
Counseling and Support
TU Dresden has established a complaints office to address incidents of harassment, discrimination, and violence. It is open to employees and students and complements the university’s compliance management system. Its work is based on the guidelines for dealing with harassment, discrimination, and violence.
TU Dresden encourages all members of the university community to address incidents and seek support. The following individuals may contact the complaints office:
-
People who have experienced harassment, discrimination, or violence,
-
close relatives or support persons,
-
People who have witnessed an incident,
-
people who wish to assess or change their own behavior.
Counseling is also available anonymously. Together, we will determine the most appropriate way to handle the situation. Possible steps include:
-
referral to appropriate internal or external counseling services,
-
working together to identify appropriate courses of action,
-
initiating a formal complaint process.
Further information is available on the page “Information on the Complaint Procedure.”
Harassing, discriminatory, or violent behavior can also be reported via TU Dresden’s digital reporting system —anonymously, if desired.
Exchange, Empowerment, and Prevention
Events focused on empowerment, awareness-raising, and dialogue are held regularly.
Supportive group settings are available for sharing experiences of discrimination. Suggestions for preventing harassment, discrimination, and violence are also welcome. The contact person for incidents of harassment, discrimination, and violence is available to address such concerns.
