Trefftz building (TRE)
Second data center location
For the first high performance computing/storage complex (HRSK), an annex to the Trefftz Building (TRE) with two new computer rooms was put into operation in 2006. With the inauguration of the LZR in May 2015, all high-performance computing and IT services are now operated at the LZR. The computer rooms in the TRE have been expanded to become a secondary site and ensure site redundancy for the most important IT services: virtual machines of our Enterprise Cloud can be moved here, important data are permanently mirrored from the LZR to the TRE, and redundant connection to the German Research Network is ensured. Outdated computer rooms with insufficient reliability and efficiency have been gradually dismantled and decommissioned since 2015.
Housing as a service
One of the computer rooms in the Trefftz building was upgraded for housing IT systems in order to be able to operate formerly decentralized IT systems centrally, securely and efficiently. An increasing number of institutes and faculties are taking advantage of this opportunity, thereby supporting the TU Dresden's IT concept: the gradual shutdown of decentralized server rooms. Fast and redundant network connections are a prerequisite for this process - they guarantee the highest quality and availability of the centrally operated IT services.
Waste heat utilization
The Trefftz building also offers the possibility of reusing waste heat from computers, though to a lesser extent than in the LZR. In winter, the waste heat from the computer room annex is used to heat the fresh air for the lecture halls which are located adjacent in the Trefftz building.
