Research-orientated learning and teaching
As part of the Excellence Strategy "TUD 2028 – Synergy and beyond," the Center for Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching (ZiLL) is responsible for three programs that promote research-oriented learning and teaching, all of which are components of the "Research-Oriented Teaching" project in the EXU priority area TALENT.
With these programs, TU Dresden pursues the goal of recruiting and promoting scientific talent at all career levels and of opening up research paths for students at an early stage.
The Funds for Student Research (FOSTER) offers students and lecturers the unique opportunity to apply for funding to implement research-oriented learning and teaching and thus makes a strong contribution to the integration of junior and (top-level) research into student education at the TUD.
Within the framework of regular funding (for projects with a volume of up to EUR 5,000) and the call for proposals published once a year (for projects with a volume of up to EUR 25,000), FOSTER supports, among other things, participation in research competitions and conferences, the implementation and visualization of student research projects and the development and implementation of research-oriented teaching-learning formats (modules, summer schools, tutorials, etc.).
FOSTER not only provides financial support, but also strengthens professional development in a targeted manner: students benefit from workshops on academic writing and academic communication as well as exchange formats. Teachers receive individual advice on the didactic planning and implementation of research-oriented teaching and learning concepts.
The goals of the FOSTER program include:
- to establish university-wide incentive structures for student research,
- to strengthen interdisciplinarity,
- to introduce students to research and academic culture at an early stage,
- to reward the commitment of teaching staff to student research projects,
- to attract excellent early-career researchers in the long term.
Further information on the application process, an overview of the funded projects and an insight into success stories of student research can be found on the FOSTER website.

(Young) scientists from the DRESDEN-concept network are specifically integrated into research-oriented teaching at the TUD through the Teaching Synergies Program (TSP). The core of the program is the cooperation in teaching tandems of TUD members and researchers from the DRESDEN-concept partner institutions, who are supported in the joint development of innovative teaching formats.
The goals of the program are
- Creating synergies between TU Dresden and DRESDEN-concept in the field of teaching
- Increasing the attractiveness of teaching programs through the integration of non-university research excellence
The TSP offers a qualification program in the field of research-oriented teaching that is precisely tailored to the target groups. It combines individual courses with an online self-study course and offers the opportunity to obtain a certificate.
In addition, the TSP's experimental laboratory provides a protected environment for developing and testing innovative teaching and learning formats. Teachers can also take advantage of professional advice on the creation of digital teaching materials.
Furthermore, they can receive individual support in didactic questions on (research-oriented) teaching independently of this during the semester , for example through didactic advice and support as well as the implementation of a Teaching Analysis Poll (TAP) for the interim evaluation of the course.
The cooperative approach promotes synergies with non-university partners, strengthens research-oriented teaching and supports the acquisition of didactic qualifications for an academic career.

The Teaching Excellence Tracks (Teaching Excellence Tracks) combine cutting-edge research with innovative teaching. The aim is to systematically integrate the content and processes of excellent research - for example from Clusters of Excellence, Collaborative Research Centers, DRESDEN-concept partner institutions or DFG projects - into TU Dresden's degree programs. This is done via clearly structured teaching-learning paths such as research modules, interactive formats or individual science coaching.
The program is aimed at:
- Students who are enthusiastic about research-led learning and would like to benefit from an interdisciplinary, internationally compatible and research-oriented range of courses. They develop a research-oriented attitude during their studies and gain access to current research infrastructures - including in digital formats.
- Teachers who want to develop research-oriented courses in clearly structured teaching-learning paths in order to introduce excellent early-career researchers to their research questions at an early stage. The program provides them with conceptual and structural support - needs-oriented and practical.
The Teaching Excellence Tracks see themselves as a collaborative platform for innovation in teaching that offers a wide range of opportunities for participation - from the development of individual courses to participation in decision-making processes and the implementation of complete teaching-learning structures. Teachers are invited to contribute their own concepts and put them into practice together with the university.
