Description
Approximately 350 sixth-semester students of Mechanical Engineering as well as Process Engineering and Natural Materials Technology and students training to become vocational teachers in “metal and machine technology” enrolled in this course.
All portions of the course were held online:
- Communication via OPAL (plus upload of all documents, info page, ...)
- Lecture livestreamed on YouTube (synchronous) and made available for later viewing on the dedicated YouTube channel (asynchronous) – https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLk0qnTn8JNgbqJnA8ebxLScxzeZjROgct
- Practicals took place in Matrix rooms with breakout Zoom meetings
- Practical training with 3 trials took place as at-home training following various formats:
- Introductory video (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLk0qnTn8JNgYCkbJretMCrJ5mMkhV1e0J)
- Newly begun practical training sequence made public via a trailer of the introductory videos on Facebook
- At-home experiments
- Consultation via Matrix messenger
- Upload of experiment protocols to OPAL
- The experiments:
- At-home experiment on digital imaging (https://youtu.be/LHhgr0nVBQI – we also made the practical training instructions public, as anyone can take part in the training on their own; link provided as a comment on the YouTube video)
- Programming of a PLC (railway experiment) (https://youtu.be/59xzLzSklWw) with program demonstrations in a GoToMeeting room (https://youtu.be/8NmdBQd_Fe8)
- Digital experiment testing a specially developed program for dynamic range (https://youtu.be/m-v4U2nx25Q )
- Digital final exam via OPAL Exam
In summary, there was a near 100% participation rate in the practical training and examination, with exceptional results in both. Teaching-on-demand formats such as #EgonsMATEveryday were very well received (this has been available on Facebook and Twitter for a while and is intended to promote engagement with the material)
