Concrete Structures

At the Institute of Concrete Structures, scientists deal with the mechanical properties of reinforced concrete in all its facets - various reinforcements, low to high-strength concretes, stresses reaching from continuous static loads to highly dynamic loads, new construction and construction within existing structures - in experiments and theoretical works at the material level up to complete buildings.

Baubetrieb

Die Optimierung der technischen, wirtschaftlichen und rechtlichen Zusammenhänge im gesamten Bauprozesses sowie auch alle die Bewirtschaftung von Bauwerken betreffenden Aktivitäten wie Planung, Neubau, Umbau, Sanierung, Abbruch, Recycling unter Aspekten der Nachhaltigkeit und Wirtschaftlichkeit sind Forschungsthemen am Institut für Baubetriebswesen.

Institute of Building Construction

The Institute of Building Construction is at the forefront of exploring the building envelope of the future, aiming to achieve high architectural appeal, astonishing transparency, and circular sustainability while reducing energy demand. With a focus on Glass & Facade Construction, the Institute’s research mission aims to create safe, sustainable, and intelligent glass and facade structures through a combination of experimental, analytical, and numerical investigations.

Mechanics

At the Institute of Mechanics and Shell Structures methods for modelling and simulating micro-heterogeneous materials under static and dynamic loads are developed. Areas of application of the developed methods are biomechanics and multicomponent materials, such as multi-phase steel, textile membrane and textile-reinforced concrete.

Construction Informatics

At the Institute of Construction Informatics an interdisciplinary research team develops new methods for building information modelling, cyber physical systems, virtual engineering labs, information logistics and multi-models. The objective is to support cooperative processes between the involved trades of civil construction from planning to operation.

Geotechnical Engineering

Research at the Chair of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering focuses on experimental and theoretical description of soils, and numerical studies of geotechnical tasks, including building ground dynamics and problems from surface mining, such as parameter determination or stability calculation of embankments.

Timber Construction

The focus of research in timber engineering is on the patented moulded wood process. Other developments concern: high performance timber structures with technical fibres, synthetic resin densified wood and thermowood. The aim is to improve the load-bearing behaviour, ductility and durability, and to increase material efficiency.

Applied Geology

Research areas of the Chair of Applied Geology at the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering are the usage, the weathering, the conservation and restoration of natural stone on buildings and objects of cultural heritage (sculptures, small monuments, tombstones etc.) and the characterisation of historical mortars.

Steel Construction

The focus of research is the development of resource-saving construction methods in steel and composite construction. This includes the assessment of sustainability in the multi-storey construction, the development of hybrid steel lightweight constructions, the use of advanced high-strength construction steels and methods for evaluating and retrofitting of old steel structures.

Research takes place at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the individual institutes and - in the case of large research projects - even across institutes, however, in these cases under the auspices of one institute. Extensive Research

Research and development have a major impact on the quality and safety of buildings.

At the institutes of the faculty user-friendly programmes are created and continuously enhanced.

For the experimental research large and performant laboratories are available. In these laboratories very large components are tested up to failure, river currents are simulated and extremely small details of construction materials are made visible with high-resolution special microscopes.

EIV-BAU

Basic evaluation for adaptation of an innovative demolition method from the mining as a new technology for the selective dismantling in sensible Areas.

„Opus Fluidum Futurum" (SPP 2005)

The goal of the DFG Priority Program 2005 is to ascertain and describe the scientific fundamentals for understanding and consecutively designing rheology-based construction processes as well as for developing innovative, sustainable building materials and associated pioneering processing technologies.

Mineral-bounded composites for enhanced structural impact safety

The primary goal of the intended Research Training Group is to bring substantial improvements in the impact-resistance of existing buildings by applying thin layers of strengthening material. By using innovative, mineral-bonded composites, public safety and the reliability of vitally important infrastructure should be significantly enhanced.

Projekt C³

C³ - Carbon Concrete Composite is currently the largest research project in Germany in the field of construction. The aim is to establish non corrosive carbon reinforcement instead of the common used steel that can corrode. The lighter, more flexible and more efficient composite of carbon fibers and concrete has the potential to revolutionize the construction sector.

SPP 1886

The mapping of reality with deterministic models suggests precision. The reality is that all the data and information are characterized by fuzziness, uncertainty, incompleteness and inaccuracy. With the SPP novel methods for the numerical design of structures are developed considering the uncertainty.

SPP 1542

Within the DFG Priority Programme 1542, more than 60 researchers at eleven German universities are currently researching on the topic of 'lightweight construction with concrete'. The aim is to obtain efficient structures by adapting the internal structure & external geometry of components to the flow of forces. The program is coordinated by the Institute for Concrete Structures.
