Approval of the Structural Health Monitoring System at the Nibelungen Bridge Worms
The Nibelungen Bridge in Worms. Today's cultural monument was built from 1951 to 1953 as one of the first large prestressed concrete bridges in cantilever construction. This year, the bridge will be 70 years old. As part of the Hundert Plus priority program, a Structural Health Monitoring System was installed on the old Nibelungen Bridge to extend its service life. Many different sensors such as temperature sensors, moisture sensors, acceleration sensors and displacement transducers were used for this purpose. The data from the sensors is analyzed to assess the condition of the bridge. In addition, the measurement data is linked to a digital model of the structure to create a digital twin.
Through the installed sensors and other methods, a digital model of the bridge is created in real time. This allows the condition of the bridge to be monitored, simulated and optimized.
In December 2022, this task package was put out to tender by the Technische Universität Dresden and Marx Krontal und Partner GmbH was awarded the contract. At the beginning of May 2023, the installed system was accepted on site in Worms. The recorded data will now be checked and subsequently made available to all 19 subprojects of the SPP Hundert Plus. This will allow the methods developed in the subprojects to be validated.
The overarching goal of the priority program SPP 2388 - Hundert plus - "Extending the life of complex building structures through intelligent digitization" is a conceptual and fundamental reorientation of the current maintenance strategy for infrastructure structures.
