Bridge construction excursion
Every summer after the end of the examination period, the Institute of Concrete Structures undertakes its traditional bridge construction excursion with the specialization in Concrete Structures of the 8th semester of the Civil Engineering degree course.
The aim of the excursion is to deepen the students' acquired theoretical knowledge of solid construction and bridge building using practical examples, because the feeling for dimensions and the idea of whether a bridge design really fits into the respective environment is best developed "in-situ". In particular, seeing and touching things that are otherwise only discussed in theory, walking on a box girder, inspecting the bridge bearings or the tendon guidance reinforces the basic theoretical knowledge. The bridges are discussed with the students on site, which sharpens their feeling for a good design. Only in the actual discussion with each other can the students not only apply their knowledge, but also learn about various new solutions that go far beyond the knowledge imparted in the lecture. This discussion is essential for the design of a bridge.
The excursions take students to a different European country every year, as civil engineering is also becoming increasingly internationalized and therefore the direct experience of other construction cultures is an important prerequisite for the responsible engineer. Different countries - different customs. This is particularly true for civil engineering and this is exactly what students should learn on these excursions.
The content of this excursion is largely prepared and organized by the participants themselves and is financed by donations. In this way, the students are already intensively involved with the destinations to be visited before the excursion and expand their knowledge independently. The joint organization of the trip leads to a strong group cohesion, which is further deepened by the camping and the many shared experiences.
