Bridge construction excursion
Every summer after the end of the examination period, the Institute of Concrete Structures undertakes its traditional bridge construction excursion with the specialization in structural engineering of the 8th semester of the diploma program in civil engineering.
The aim of the excursion is to deepen the students' theoretical knowledge in mechanical engineering and bridge building by the meanings of practical examples, because the sense of dimensions and the idea of whether a bridge design really fits into the respective environment is best understood "in situ". In particular, seeing and touching things that are otherwise only theoretically discussed, like committing a hollow box, assessing the bridge bearings or the tendon guide strengthens the theoretical knowledge. On site, the students discuss the bridges and thus sharpen their sense of a good design. Only in the direct discussion with each other, the students can not only apply their knowledge, but get to know different, new solutions, which goes far beyond the knowledge transferable in the lecture. This discussion is indispensable for the design of a bridge. The excursions lead each year to another European country. In civil engineering, there is a growing internationalization and therefore the immediate experience of other building cultures is an important prerequisite for the responsible engineer. Other countries other manners. This is especially true for civil engineering and this is exactly what the students should be taught on these excursions.
The contents of this excursion are prepared and organized by the students themselves, and the funding is provided through donations. Already before the excursion the students intensively deal with the goals to be visited and expand their knowledge independently. The organization of the trip leads to a strong group cohesion, which is further deepened by camping and the many community experiences.
