This project analyses the representation of communal identity in the short fiction penned by various contemporary black British writers, such as Hanif Kureishi, Jackie Kay and Hari Kunzru. Based on a combination of deconstructivist philosophical concepts of community and postcolonial conceptualisations, the project investigates how the short story serves these writers as a vehicle not only to imagine "a new way of being British" (Kureishi) but also to challenge exclusionary and monocultural notions of community.
