Working at eye level
The research-oriented teaching concept of the Chair of Modern German Literature and Media Culture Studies is based on the fundamental assumption that learning and knowledge content, perspectives and methods relating to media culture studies, as well as the ability to think critically and engage in productive scientific practice, are best acquired in the form of interdisciplinary motivated work.
Interdisciplinary teaching and learning
The research-oriented teaching concept of the Chair of Modern German Literature and Media Cultural Studies is based on the fundamental assumption that media cultural studies learning and knowledge content, perspectives and methods as well as the ability to think critically and engage in productive academic practice are best acquired in the form of interdisciplinary work.
The seminars offered by the Chair aim to discuss and think through individual media and literary studies issues in the context of cultural analysis and cultural theory constellations. By focusing on a specific seminar topic, the seminars combine four interdisciplinary levels:
- Raising awareness of current topics, issues and methods in media and literary studies
- Providing basic literary and media-historical insights into the genesis of individual symbolic and media forms
- An understanding of fundamental contexts in the history of mentality and cultural theory of modernity
- The ability to observe and methodically analyze literary, cinematic and audiovisual objects, their content and their aesthetics
In concrete terms, this means that attending the seminars offered by the Chair at both Bachelor's and Master's level pursues the goal of research-based learning, whereby the performance requirements are of course differentiated by degree. Nevertheless, participation at both levels of study requires a high degree of personal responsibility, independence and willingness to read on the part of the students.
In the joint work, knowledge content should be reflected upon and analyzed with regard to its conditions of origin. Ideally, this approach enables students to acquire orientation knowledge and analytical tools for dealing with media and literary subjects. On the other hand, it is also about promoting a culture of thinking in processes, which is indispensable for responsible participation in the modern knowledge society.
