General information for the degree programme
The Master's programme Literature, Culture and Societal Change (LiKWA) is based on current research in literature, cultural and media studies. The degree programme is characterised above all by its interdisciplinary comparative perspective, focusing not only on historical and contemporary phenomena, but also providing the theoretical and methodological skills required for the critical analysis of cultural and societal change. The objective of the degree is the academic qualification of students in the field of literature, culture and media studies. In addition to preparing students for their own research activities in the narrower sense, the Master's degree programme LiKWA aims to qualify students for the increasingly complex tasks in the key fields of work of the knowledge society of the 21st century.
Study contents
The degree is modular in structure and is divided into four semesters, with the third semester serving as a mobility window for a mandatory stay abroad.
The programme comprises seven compulsory modules and two elective modules. The elective modules allow students to choose their own specialisation. The student must choose one profile:
- practical language profile
- scientific profile
In the first two semesters, lectures of all institutes of the faculty can be taken. Literature and culture in societal change can be studied both across philologies and with a subject-specific focus. The following subjects are available:
- English and American Studies
- German Studies
- Classical Philology
- Romance Studies
- Slavic Studies
The option of choosing the focus allows for a flexible organisation of the degree, which is also supported by the Studies Co-ordinator at the SLK faculty. The modular structure promotes interdisciplinary cooperation with lecturers and students of the linguistics programme European Languages (EuroS) as well as other programmes of School of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSW) at the TU Dresden.
Stays abroad
The 3rd semester is intended as a mobility window for a mandatory stay abroad, which can be arranged as a research stay at another university.
Professional field
Literature and culture are at the centre of societal transformation processes. The scientifically sound competencies required to observe, describe and critically question the conditions of these processes are becoming increasingly important. This applies both to the sciences themselves and to the knowledge society beyond the university.
The Master's degree programme Literature and Culture in Societal Change (LiKWa) offers you a research-orientated, interdisciplinary and international education of exactly these competences. Through an obligatory stay abroad as well as the promotion of national and international networking of the students, LiKWa enables the intensive and independent participation in scientific and social discourses already in the master’s phase. In addition to academia professional fields can be education, publishing, cultural management, media, scientific and corporate communication, foundations, politics etc.
