Theses
Sorry - this document is available in German only.
According to §26 of the applicable examination regulations, there are no formal requirements for the Bachelor's thesis. However, it is highly advisable to follow the recommended study plan and to begin the Bachelor thesis only after completion of the basic subjects. For the defence of the Bachelor's thesis (colloquium), however, the Bachelor's thesis must have been graded at least "adequate" (4.0).
In the Master's programme in Computer Science, the module examinations of the selected profile modules must have been completed and graded with at least "sufficient" (4.0) before the Master's thesis begins. The Master's thesis must have been graded at least "adequate" (4.0) before the defence.
In the Master's programme Media Informatics, the Master's thesis must have been graded at least "sufficient" (4.0) before the defence. There are no further admission requirements for the Master's thesis in Media Informatics.
In the diploma degree programme in Computer Science (matriculation year from 2010), the completion of the profile modules is a prerequisite for starting the diploma thesis. Before defending the thesis, 284 credit points must have been earned. This means that in order to be able to defend (defense equals a credit point), the specialisation module with 15 credit points, for example, may also be missing. Of course, before the defence, the thesis must have been graded at least "sufficient" (4.0). The 29 credit points for the diploma thesis are already acquired if the thesis has been graded at least with "sufficient" (4,0) and thus count towards the required 284 LP.
The topics for final theses are assigned by the professorships themselves. In general, you will have to contact the respective professorship or the respective supervisor of your desired topic directly. You can find links to descriptions of topics for final theses from the various professorships here .
Diploma in Computer Science
Before registering for the diploma thesis in the Diploma in Computer Science degree program, you must have your admission checked and apply for admission using the "Admission to Diploma Thesis" form. With this application, you prove that you have completed the module examinations of the selected pair of profile modules and passed them with at least "sufficient" (4.0).
You can find the form for "Admission to Diploma Thesis" here.
Master of Computer Science
Before registering for the Master's thesis in the Master of Computer Science degree program, you must have your admission checked and apply for admission using the "Admission to the Master's thesis" form. With this application, you prove that you have completed the module examinations of the selected pair of profile modules and passed them with at least "sufficient" (4.0).
You can find the form for "Admission to the Master's thesis" here.
Students must register for the thesis themselves.
The relevant registration forms for each degree program can be found here.
Please note the following when completing the form:
In addition to your personal details, the title of the thesis must be given in both German and English, as well as the desired start date. On the form, two members of the Faculty of Computer Science who are authorized examiners must also confirm that they will each provide an expert opinion.
Please ensure that either all signatures on the form are handwritten or that all signatories sign digitally.
Once all the necessary signatures have been obtained digitally, the form can be sent by email to theses.inf@tu-dresden.de with the thesis application. Please note that you must have a valid digital signature from the ZIH if you wish to sign the registration form electronically.
If all signatures are handwritten, you can submit the form either by post or in person at the Examinations Office during office hours.
Please note:
In order to enable the start of processing according to the start date chosen together with the examiner, a submission must be made to the examination office 14 DAYS BEFORE the start of the processing period!
Otherwise, the examination board cannot guarantee that the examination will be issued by the examination office on time!
After admission and confirmation by the examination board, a scan will be made available to you as a student via datashare.
For all types of final theses (Bachelor's, Master's and Diploma thesis), the written form must have been graded at least 4.0 before you can defend it or present it in the form of a colloquium.
For Diplom students, the additional requirement is that the form Application for the defence of the Diplom thesis in the Diplom programme in Computer Science must be used to prove that at least 284 credit points have been earned in the course of study.
In principle, it is possible to write the thesis externally. Please note, however, that this possibility is not supported by every university teacher. Therefore, if possible, before your plans in this respect have reached maturity, look for a university teacher at the faculty whose subject area is related to the intended topic of the final thesis and who has a positive attitude towards such an approach. You will also need a supervisor at the institution where you will be working on your thesis. This supervisor must be able to assess the performance of the dissertation from a professional and academic perspective.
The examination regulations state on this question "two typewritten and bound copies and in digital text form on a suitable data storage medium".
Submission of bound copies
Above means that the work must be submitted in duplicate, each ...
- ... bound (please ask the supervising professor for the form of binding) and
- ... digital (from now on, digital submission will be made exclusively by e-mail according to the description below for submission in electronic form; CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, USB sticks or similar will not be accepted.)
to the Examination Office within the deadline. The Examination Office documents the submission in its files and stamps the submission date in the papers.
Submission in electronic form
Alternatively, the thesis may be submitted exclusively via electronic mail:
- Students send the following documents in due time exclusively by e-mail to the functional address :
- the PDF of the thesis including the declaration of independent work which must either have a digital signature or a signature string.
- [concerns only diploma computer science students:] completely filled out application for defence (signed by digital signature or with a signature string)
- this submission e-mail must contain the following information:
- Subject: "Submission of [Bachelor|Master|Diploma]thesis [Computer Science|Media Informatics|CSE|DSE|EMCL|MCL|CMS]".
- Mail content:
- Full name (last name, first name)
- Registration number
- Course of studies and type of thesis (Bachelor, Master, Diplom)
- Title of the work
- Examiners, supervisor (name, first name, e-mail address)
- If attachments to the thesis are to be submitted which are larger than 20MB, they must be saved in the TUD CloudStore and a link to the uploaded file(s) on the CloudStore must be included in the submission e-mail.
- As soon as the submission e-mail has arrived in the mailbox, the student will receive a confirmation e-mail.
- The examination office
- sends the form of the defense/colloquium transcript to the reviewers as soon as the mailbox is processed;
- sends a confirmation of the file note to students as well as to the supervisor.
Please also pay attention to the notes on the submission date in FAQs (see below)!
If you submit the thesis exclusively electronically, then the submission deadline noted in the registration of your thesis or the deadline approved by the examination board as part of an extension request is binding.
For the submission of bound copies, an appointment outside office hours can be arranged with the examination office if the submission date is a normal working day. If the submission date falls on a weekend day or a public holiday or, for example, between Christmas and New Year's Day (closing time of the TU Dresden), then the printed copies will be submitted on the day following the submission date on which the examination office is open.
The topic/title of the thesis is binding and may not differ between the registration and the submitted thesis. The language in which the thesis is to be written is also binding. The reviewers may not change either.
