Portrait of Professor Fröhlich
Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Jochen Fröhlich has held the Chair of Fluid Mechanics since 2007 and has been Director of the Institute of Fluid Mechanics since 2010.
Without fluid mechanics ... we would not be able to understand central processes in nature and technology. Transport processes, forces and material conversion are caused by flows - from the large scales of meteorology to the technical scales of airplanes, pumps, reactors in process engineering and many other devices, right down to the smallest scales of microfluidics and biology. Fluid mechanics is a fundamental and cross-sectional science with a fascinating breadth of theory and applications and is predestined for interdisciplinary work.
Being a professor... is my dream job. Imparting knowledge to dedicated students and encouraging them to be independent and creative is an exciting task. The desire to understand things and to conduct research at the highest level is a daily incentive. The symbiosis of both in the Humboldtian sense is our strength and our future.
Students ... should try to ask the right questions. "What do I want?" is one of them. Anyone who commits their time and energy will realize how exciting knowledge is.
In the future ... I will continue to work to ensure that the university is a place of cosmopolitan, human debate on scientific and social issues. Engineering plays a central role in this today.
If I could study again... I would have another wonderful time of discovery. And actually, this adventure is still going on.
The Excellence Initiative... offers the opportunity to create exciting science with wonderful colleagues. The title is a great recognition for our university. Excellence as such is a constant challenge, an obligation, an ideal that is worth striving for.
