Bioprocess Engineering
Bioprocess engineering, bioengineering and industrial biotechnology are synonyms for the scientific discipline that deals with the technical implementation of biological material transformations. Bioprocess engineering is located at the interface between biology and engineering sciences and transfers the results of basic biological and biochemical research into industrially usable processes.
The use of sustainable carbon sources (CO2 and its derivatives, lignocellulose, industrial waste streams) for various microbial and enzymatic material syntheses is the focus of our interest. We use a wide range of methods, from molecular biotechnology and model-based optimization of fermentation processes to the automation of biotechnological work processes.
Our core research areas cover a wide range of industrial biotechnology. In particular, they lie in the fields of bioprocess technology, metabolic engineering and synthetic biotechnology, plant and algae biotechnology, enzyme technology and the development of smart automated laboratory applications.

The alumni association Netzwerk Bioverfahrenstechnik Dresden e.V. closely cooperates with the Institute of Natural Materials Technology and is a building block for the development of biotechnology in Germany, especially in Dresden. Due to the large number of our members a dense network is created, their work areas and institutions / companies, promoting cooperation between bioprocess engineers from institutions and industries and therefore connecting the research close to the practice. Besides the subject-specific exchange of information Netzwerk Bioverfahrenstechnik Dresden e.V. supports finding of contacts, sharing of equipment and know-how, tendering of internships / dissertations and job offers, get-together at fairs and conferences in the field of biotechnology.
