FungiScout: The Hidden Kingdom: Discover mushrooms for food, clothing, warmth and light
Mushrooms are the hidden realm between plants and animals. They live in a cosmos that is mostly ignored by humans, although it exerts a great fascination.
Not only sustainable food, but also bio-based raw materials, bio-catalysts and regenerative energies are extracted from fungi, so that in the age of the bio-economy they actually provide people with food, clothing, heat and light. This makes them an excellent example of the diversity of feedstocks and technologies in the bio-economy.
Cultivation, enzyme extraction and isolation of active ingredients from edible mushrooms can also be carried out with simple student experiments without complex infrastructure. The experimental kits can be used to implement a concept of mobile science communication that provides vocational and secondary school students with unique experiences, establishes personal contact with researchers, and encourages dialogue.
