MW-VNT-84 Wood drying and modification
Qualification goals
Students have comprehensive knowledge of how to control various drying processes, in particular how to ensure the high quality of products made from sawn timber or wood-based materials made from lignocellulosic structural elements and how to avoid drying errors. Students will be able to plan, dimension and calculate the individual processes for drying wood. They are proficient in the calculation and simple modeling of drying processes and the design of drying systems. Students will also have comprehensive knowledge of the in a targeted manner physical, chemical and biological modification of wood and lignocellulosic structural elements to improve specific properties depending on the requirements.
Contents
The module covers fundamental aspects of the anatomical, chemical and physical properties of wood and wood-based materials as well as the laws of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. This includes lumber drying and the drying of veneers and particles, the creation of drying plans, drying quality and standardization, the design and planning of drying systems, and the costs of wood drying. The module also covers physical, chemical and biological process technologies and the resulting changes in properties for the in a targeted manner modification of cell walls for the use of native wood species for the substitution of tropical wood species, metals and plastics with special consideration of the application and the place of use.
