Bühler TalksM. Ullsperger: Performance monitoring - a key function for flexible, adaptive behavior
Abstract
Monitoring for erroneous and unexpected action outcomes is essential to optimize our actions in the service of goal achievement. I will discuss EEG and fMRI studies addressing which signals are represented in the performance monitoring system and how they are weighted to determine the need for adaptation. In particular, I will focus on the posterior medial frontal cortex as a key region consistently shown to be involved in performance monitoring and decision making functions. I will show that EEG dynamics generated in this region encode various variables that guide or bias future decisions. In the second part of the presentation I will discuss the neural implementation of post-error adjustments, such as post-error slowing and post-error attentional regulation. I will conclude the presentation by giving an outlook on outstanding questions and future approaches to translate this fundamental research into more applied fields.
