J. Plass: Designing for Effective Virtual Reality for Learning
Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University &Paulette Goddard Chair of Digital Media and Learning Sciences
Abstract
Virtual Reality provides great opportunity for learning, but as with all other media, the effectiveness of VR learning environments depends on their design.
In this talk I will propose affordances of VR for learning and will discuss visual, auditory, and haptic design elements that can make VR effective for learning.
For these design elements, I will investigate the function the VR design can have in support of learning, such as feedback, guidance, or emotion induction.
About Prof. Jan Plass
Dr. Plass is a Professor in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University; and Paulette Goddard Chair of Digital Media and Learning Sciences. He is the founding director of CREATE, the Consortium for Research and Evaluation of Advanced Technology in Education; and co-directs the Games for Learning Institute with Ken Perlin.
Dr. Plass’ research is at the intersection of cognitive science, learning sciences, and design, and seeks to enhance the effectiveness of interactive visual environments for learning. His current focus is on cognitive and emotional design for simulations and games for math and science education, health, and cognitive skills development.
