M.J. van Tol: (Re)-Building a cognitive shield against depression: Neurocognitive working mechanisms of preventive interventions for lowering relapse risk in depression
Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Groningen
Abstract
Major Depressive Disorder is one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorder, characterized by a high risk for relapse. This relapse-remitting course makes prevention of subsequent episodes an urgent clinical goal. Often individuals experience residual symptoms, including mood symptoms, lack of motivation, rumination and cognitive dysfunction. These symptoms hinder full recovery in daily life, which further contributes to the high risk for relapse.
In this lecture, studies aimed at understanding and moderating the neurocognitive vulnerability for relapse will be discussed, including randomized clinical trials of treatments with known or suggested protective effects, such as preventive cognitive therapy, mindfulness and positive fantasizing. Also new directions in improving cognitive recovery following depressive episodes will be introduced.
