The Early warning system PASST?! is organized by the Central Student Information and Counseling Service.
PASST?! has been funded by the federal government and the Free State of Saxony during two funding phases from 2016 until 2023 as part of the Higher Education Pact. Since 2024 it is an integral part of the counseling and support structures of the TU Dresden and involved in the STUDY SMART network project.
How the Early warning system works

PASST?! processes
After students have agreed to participate, the early warning system PASST?! automatically checks individual study progress and examination data. The data check is performed once a semester (with the exception of a 14-day cycle for the identifier "At least one examination failed for the second time") and, for the most part, focuses on pre-semester performance. The employees of PASST?! do not have access to the study progress and examination data of the participants, but only answer queries in the examination management systems.
Participants are identified when certain warning notices that may indicate problems - so-called identifiers - are detected during the course of the study. In this case, students will receive an email with appropriate counseling and support services to their TU Dresden email address.
The early warning system currently uses five warning notices that can provide information on problematic situations:
- Standard period of study exceeded by at least two semesters
- Less than 30 ECTS earned in the past two semesters of study
- At least one examination failed for the second time
- Fewer than two examinations passed in the first semester of study
- Withdrew from registered exams at least three times in one semester
PASST?!'s offers are fed by the overall offers of TU Dresden. Consideration will be given to offers from, among others
In addition to the existing counseling services offered by the Central Student Information and Counseling Service, PASST?! contributes to the development of further counselling and support services.
The backgrounds, causes and motives for a course of study that may lead to a dropout becoming apparent within PASST?! are incorporated into TU Dresden's quality management system via anonymous statistics. They will be used for the improvement of overall study conditions.
At the end of every summer semester, PASST?! publishes a statistical report containing the participant and identification data. All published reports can be found on this website. Access is password-protected and can be requested from the PASST?! team.
Advisory Board
In September 2021, the advisory board of PASST?! was established. It supports the content-related and strategic ongoing development of the Early Warning System and provides important perspectives from the entire university. Participants include the Vice-Rector Academic Affairs, representatives of the heads of Academic Affairs Offices, study program coordinators (student and academic) and the head of the Central Student Information. The advisory board meets once a semester and has an advisory function. Between the meetings, members of the board are informed about the current developments of PASST?! via newsletter.
