Saving energy at the workplace

There are many ways to save energy in everyday work and thus contribute to environmental protection at TU Dresden. Already when purchasing equipment, energy consumption and the longest possible service life of the item should be considered as criteria in addition to price and performance. Operating PCs in energy-saving mode and switching them off when not in use helps to save energy, as does reducing the room temperature (1 degree reduction means approx. 6% less energy consumption).

Area Tips
Electrical devices at the workplace
  • Pay attention to energy consumption when purchasing new equipment
  • Disable obsolete, little-used devices
  • Use energy-saving functions (energy-saving mode, hibernation mode) of PCs and other devices
  • Only switch on devices shortly before use, switch off at the end and during longer breaks
  • Use remote access via "Wake-on-LAN" (WoL) if necessary
IT peripherals
  • Reduce the number of devices
  • Centralize printers, copiers and servers
Lighting
  • Use daylight wherever possible
  • Switch off lights during long breaks and at the end of the working day
Coffee maker and kettle
  • Use a thermos jug instead of the coffee machine's keep-warm function
  • Heat only the amount of water needed and also descale occasionally
Refrigerator in the tea kitchens
  • Close the door tightly and defrost more often
  • An internal temperature of 8°C is optimal for tea kitchens
  • Place warm leftovers in the refrigerator only after they have cooled down
Elevator
  • Use stairs instead - this saves electricity and keeps you fit
Commonly used rooms / teaching rooms
  • Check heating, ventilation, lighting, projectors and other equipment when leaving the room and switch off if necessary
Room climate
  • Do not keep windows tilted all the time - better ventilate briefly and vigorously
  • The optimum room temperature is 20-22°C
Printing
  • Paper production and print is energy-intensive - if a printout is necessary, then, if possible, on resource-saving recycled paper
