GeoKur - Data curation for the environmental sciences
In the environmental sciences, there is no clearly defined common procedure for quality assurance and curatiion of research data for the numerous interdisciplinary projects and research alliances. The BMBF project GeoKur now aims to support curating and quality assurance already in the research process and not only in the final publication of the research data. The developments include approaches for a consistent basis of data as a starting point for coherent interdisciplinary research in the environmental sciences and the largely automated acquisition of metadata. For this purpose, existing standards and best practices are brought together, which will be further developed, tested and implemented exemplarily and in the sense of a comprehensive proof of concept using the example of global land use data. These time series are not only relevant for many environmental disciplines (food production, biodiversity research, nature conservation, water and resource availability), but also represent characteristic challenges for data curation, quality assurance and the provision of a consistent basis for environmental research that have not yet been comprehensively solved. The ZIH is responsible for the implementation of the concept and the development of the corresponding software tools.
