Distributed Computing and Cloud Computing
eScience (enhanced Science) represents the vision to push forward science through the use of modern IT infrastructures and paradigms. The driving force for this particular research discipline is the evaluation of large amounts of data and the need for extensive calculations. Examples of the former include biomedical research using pictures and films, and particle physics research producing a huge amount of experimental data. Enormous computing power demands arise from parameter studies in engineering or bioinformatics. A key point of eScience is distributed computation by employing Cloud and Grid Computing. Objectives of distributed computing are the sharing of existing resources in the different places, such as computer systems, storage systems, or devices (e.g., telescopes) and their efficient utilization. ZIH is conducting research in this area for over fifteen years.
