Performance evaluation in (vocational) education: Peter Schulze (#PS2)
Format
The seminar was asynchronous from the start with the help of OPAL and the tools named below. We had set meeting dates for synchronous seminars via Zoom. These follow-up sessions served as an opportunity to discuss results, and check students’ understanding and gather input for the new seminar topic.
Keywords
Diagnostic competence of teachers, perception and observation, criteria for measuring performance, summarizing and reviewing performance, operators, preparing written and oral performance checks
Description
Organization and information: The seminar was organized as an OPAL group. Explanatory videos and learning snacks provided an overview and first introduction to the topic.
Surveys and differentiation: Prior to the start of the semester, students completed a survey, the responses to which helped better adapt the seminar to their interests as well as their technical requirements.
Exchange and discussion: Discussion of the seminars in the forums was part of the course from the very beginning. Upload and discussion of the results in a Padlet was an integral part of the seminar.
Practice, repetition and application: Interactive videos required an active response from students at certain points. Video simulations of lectures were created, which were to be evaluated with the help of a self-made evaluation tool. An explanatory video was followed by a test in OPAL.
Seminar content: Performance evaluations pose a major challenge for teachers – both in terms of reviewing performance in the classroom and for practical activities during internships. Performance evaluation is especially difficult when it entails an analysis of skills rather than just memorization of facts and content (e.g. for speeches and presentations).
The seminar took a closer look at observation and evaluation in (vocational) education. The students considered and discussed scientific findings, conducted experiments, presented current evaluation tools and developed strategies for making observation and evaluation in (vocational) education transparent, taking into consideration criteria for performance measurement.
