Saxon Student Survey - Continuous Monitoring of Study Conditions and Study Quality in the Free State of Saxony
Goals
Since 2005, the Kompetenzzentrum für Bildungs- und Hochschulforschung has conducted large-scale surveys of students at Saxon universities on a regular basis. Continuous student surveys - like graduate studies - are an essential and indispensable extension to existing higher education statistics with their information on the number of students, final examinations, etc. A comprehensive picture of the study situation and study quality can only be obtained if students provide detailed information about their positive but also negative study experiences and report on their study progress, their further study plans and their personal study situation from their own point of view. This is made possible by the Saxon Student Survey.
The Saxon Student Survey is designed as a longitudinal study. For this reason, a number of questions are asked repeatedly each time. This allows for statements to be given about the development of study conditions and study quality in Saxony over a long period of time. Since the first survey was already conducted in 2005, this assessment goes back to the time before the change in the study structure as part of the Bologna Process when Bachelor's and Master's degree programs were introduced. The survey instrument is coordinated with nationwide surveys, especially those conducted by the Deutsches Zentrum für Hochschul- und Wissenschaftsforschung (DZHW); thus, nationwide comparisons are also possible. In addition, each survey has a special subject focus. The 4th Saxon Student Survey will address in particular the experiences of students under the special circumstances of the Corona pandemic. Furthermore, special focus will also be given to the counseling of students at the universities. In contrast to the two previous student surveys, in 2022 along with the four universities and five universities of applied sciences, students at Saxony's art colleges will also be included.
Just like the last survey, the 4th Saxon Student Survey will be conducted as an online survey. Every second Saxon student was randomly selected by his/her own university and will receive an invitation by mail to participate in the survey. The survey starts at the beginning of March and is expected to last until mid-April.
The quality of the study significantly depends on a high participation of the students. Also on behalf of the SMWK and your university, we ask you to participate in this study and to help so that we can learn more about the quality of studies and the situation of students, and the universities can use this as a basis to further develop and improve their study programs.
Of course, the results of the Saxon Student Survey are available publicly and free of charge. The results of the 4th Saxon Student Survey will be available on this page from the end of 2022.
